POEM (peroral endoscopic myotomy) is a minimally invasive procedure. It is used to treat a group of disorders that affect the esophagus. The most common of these disorders is achalasia. Achalasia (failure to relax) is a disease of the muscle of the esophagus. When present, patients can experience dysphagia (difficulty swallowing food, and [sometimes] liquids), chest pain & can experience recurrent pneumonia & loss of weight.
G-POEM (gastric peroral endoscopic myotomy) is an innovative procedure to treat patients with gastroparesis, a condition where the stomach does not empty properly.
