2025-2030 Strategic Planning Process

When I joined the Department of Medicine as Chair in 2022, I knew my first few years on the job would be spent listening to and learning from the faculty, care-providers, researchers, staff, educators and trainees who make our department great.

This is essential work that I will always do. But now, I’d like to take what I’ve learned and use it as we plan for the future.

The Department of Medicine is embarking on a strategic planning process. This project will take extra time, care and attention, but we feel it’s an important step to ensure we’re heading in the best direction.

We’ll need input from every member of our team to help us better understand our collective vision for the department and gather feedback on areas in which we most need improvement. There will be many ways to provide input, such as office hours and town halls, and we'll use this webpage to keep you updated on our progress.

Thank you for taking the time to assist with this endeavor. Your voice is integral as we consider our vitality and define our vision.

Sincerely,

Review IU's Strategic Plan

In April 2023, Indiana University launched a strategic plan that serves as the vision for IU’s third century in higher education. It outlines the university's commitment to student success, research and service in the State of Indiana. The Department of Medicine's goals align with these commitments, as well as those outlined in IU School of Medicine's 2030 Strategic Plan.

Project Timeline

This is a general timeline and subject to change.

Phase 1: Survey

Our strategic planning will kick-off in January with a department-wide survey. Strategic Planning Champions will be selected. Data from the surveys will be analyzed and released early March.

Phase 2: Town Halls

Town hall meetings will be held, beginning in mid-March. Faculty, providers, staff and learners will have the opportunity to share ideas and ask questions of the Champions and Department leadership.

Phase 3: Retreat

In mid-May, the Department will hold a one-day retreat with 50 stakeholders to workshop ideas generated in the survey and town halls. Champions will conduct post-retreat work.

Phase 4: Release

The proposed strategic plan will be submitted to IU School of Medicine and IU Health officials for review by early August and then to the Department of Medicine by early September.

Upcoming Events

Strategic Planning Town Halls

With the department-wide survey wrapped up, our Strategic Planning Champions will now look to further engage with faculty, providers, staff, learners and trainees. These department stakeholders are invited to participate in a series of virtual town halls. Each meeting will focus on a pre-identified topic, including research, education, finances, career development and wellness. Results of the survey will be shared, and participants will have the chance to dive deeper into some of the questions that were asked.

Strategic Planning Town Hall: Education, Research
Tuesday, April 8, from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Strategic Planning Town Hall: Finance & Administration, Clinical Care

2025-2030 Department of Medicine Strategic Planning Retreat

Dr. Aronoff and the leadership team of the Department of Medicine will host an in-person, day-long Strategic Planning Retreat with committee members on Thursday, May 8, in Indianapolis. This inclusive event will be facilitated by the Indiana University School of Medicine Faculty Affairs and Professional Development office and is an important part of the process of writing a new 5-year strategy for the department.
