Through the generosity of alumni, friends, corporations and foundations, the IU School of Medicine annually awards scholarships and loans to financially and academically deserving medical students. The named scholarships programs listed below reflect the importance that individuals have placed on making an investment in future physicians — an investment that will yield a valuable resource and quality medical practitioners.

Scholarship Selection
IU School of Medicine awards over $8 million in scholarships annually, placing us at the national average for total scholarship funding per enrolled student. Scholarship funding has been a priority for the school. Dean Hess and the Office of Gift Development focus on scholarships when meeting with donors and alumni. To show his level of commitment, Dean Hess and Mrs. Hess have personally funded scholarships.
IU School of Medicine scholarships are used in the recruitment of our best and brightest students (focusing on merit and diversity). Additionally, IU School of Medicine grants merit-based and indebtedness scholarships to the fourth year students.
IU School of Medicine’s scholarship selections are made by the scholarship committee each year in late June with recruitment scholarships decided throughout the recruitment and admissions season. While some scholarships have restrictions, the committee maintains a philosophy of equal opportunity. Medical students receiving the Indiana Primary Care Scholarship, Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship Programs (HPSP) or the National Health Service Corps Scholarship (NHSC) will be deemed ineligible for IU School of Medicine scholarships. Likewise, any student who is in the combined degree program will not be eligible for our scholarships.

Scholarship requirements
Annual scholarships may be one year only with no expectation for renewal. Multi-year scholarships may have requirements for renewal.
- All renewal scholarships require clear first time passing of all courses/clerkships and students must be in good academic standing require passing all courses on the first attempt as well as all USMLE exams.
- Progress academically in a timely fashion and take exams when appropriate.
- Loss of scholarship for academic (e.g. failure or repeating a year)/professionalism reasons may be permanent.
- Scholarships from all sources may not exceed total tuition.
- No more than four years of funding.
Good academic standing, as defined by the scholarship committee, is a student who is not on academic probation for any reason during the entire preceding academic year or semester.

Roy Rheinhardt Award | This award was established in 1959 in memory of Roy Rheinhardt, a third-year medical student who was killed in an automobile accident. Recipients from the fourth year class are selected by the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. |
Ruth Hamilton Scholarship | This scholarship was established in 2003 through the estate of Ruth E. Hamilton. |
Ruth Lilly Medical Scholarships | This scholarship was established in December 1999 to provide recruitment scholarships to attract the best and brightest Indiana residents to the IU School of Medicine. The recipient will be at the top of their class. |
Ruth Wenning Roggenkamp Memorial Scholarship | This scholarship was established in 2017 by Milton W. Roggenkamp, MD, in memory of his wife Ruth, who was a constant presence at his side. Ruth Wenning Roggenkamp passed away on February 5, 2017 at the age of 92 years old. |
Ryland P. Roesch, MD and Nancy O. Roesch Scholarship | This scholarship was established in June 2001 to support medical student scholarships. |
SAFECO Insurance Scholarship | This scholarship was originally established in April, 1995 by the American States Insurance Company to support scholarships for minority medical students. American States Insurance was acquired in 1997 by SAFECO Insurance Company, and at the request of Donor, this fund will now be known as the SAFECO Insurance Scholarship. |
Scot and Ann Moore Scholarship in Medicine | This scholarship was established in 2017 by Scot B. and Ann R. Moore. This gift is used to support scholarships at the Indiana University School of Medicine for students who are graduates of either Purdue University or Indiana University. Preference will be given to students who have had at least two years between the completion of their undergraduate studies and enrolling in medical school. |
Scott C. and Kathryn Schurz Scholarship | This scholarship was established in 2011 by Scott C. and Kathryn Schurz to support medical student scholarships. The scholarships are based on the student's financial need and academic excellence. |
Senior Class Scholarship | This scholarship was established by the graduating Classes of 1994 and thereafter to provide scholarships to IU School of Medicine students. |
Shlens Brothers Scholarship | This scholarship was established in 2009 by brothers Robert and Michael Shlens. This gift is used to support scholarships at the Indiana University School of Medicine with preference given to medical students with a physical disability. |
Steinmetz Family Scholarship | This scholarship was established in 2002 by Edward Steinmetz, MD, to support full-tuition scholarships for medical students. |
Stephen J. Rudolph, Jr., Scholarship | This general scholarship was established in 2008 through an IRA beneficiary designation of Gertrude R. Rudolph. |
Ted and Pauline Grisell Scholarship | The scholarship was established in 1997 by Dr. Ted Grisell to honor the memory of his wife, Pauline Grisell. This scholarship is awarded to Indiana residents based on financial need and academic achievement. Can be renewed up to four years for the student with good academic standing. |
Ted L. Grayson, MD, and Rosanna (Shoe) Grayson Scholarship | This scholarship was established in 2013 by Ted L. Grayson, MD, and Rosanna (Shoe) Grayson to support scholarships at the Indiana University School of Medicine. Recipients of the scholarship must have been a resident of Indiana for at least five years, have high moral character, academic ability and scholastic achievement. Preference should be given to first-year students, upper class students, combined degree students and transfer students. It is also the intent of the donors that each scholarship cover tuition and fees only, and automatically renewable, provided the recipient(s) continues to meet the applicable criteria and maintains a 3.3 GPA on a 4.0 scale. If at any time in the future, the school does not maintain student GPAs, then the recipient(s) should be in the top 25% of the class. Applicants for the Ted L. Grayson, MD, and Rosanna (Shoe) Grayson Scholarship shall submit three letters of recommendation that attest to such qualities as the applicant's moral character, service to others, honesty and compassion. The recommendations may be submitted by individuals who know the applicant such as employers, student advisors, guidance counselors, teachers, clergy or leaders of organizations that the applicant has participated in. |
The Aline Mary Aust Condict and Charles H. Aust, Sr., MD, Scholarship | This scholarship was established in December 1998 in memory of Aline Mary Aust Condict and Charles H. Aust Sr., MD. The scholarship can be renewed for four years. Special consideration will be given to medical students of rural background or who attended the University of Evansville. Further, students should first be chosen from those who reside in or whose families reside in Warrick, Vigo, or Allen counties and their respective contiguous IN counties. Student must also be attending the Evansville campus during their first two years of medical school. |
The Charles E. Walters, MD and Thelma Walters Scholarship in Medicine | This fund was established in 1999 by Thelma Walters to be divided equally between the Charles E. Walters, MD and Thelma Walters Scholarship in Medicine and the Charles E. Walters, MD and Thelma Walters Scholarship in Nursing. Preference is given to students who graduated from a high school in the state of Indiana. |
The Daniel J. Jugovic Memorial Scholarship | This scholarship was established in 1990 in memory of Daniel J. Jugovic, MD, a 1983 graduate of IU School of Medicine who died tragically. First preference will be given to a fourth-year medical student of Croatian ancestry who has declared an intention to pursue anesthesia as a practicing specialty; second preference to any medical student with Croatian ancestry; final preference will be given to a senior medical student with intent to pursue anesthesia. If no one is found with this criteria, the scholarship can be awarded based on academics and financial need. |
The Lillian Qualley Spenner Scholarship | This fund was established in 1993 through the estate of Lillian Q. Spenner. Funds will be made available to deserving students enrolled in the IU School of Medicine who are bona fide residents of St. Joseph County, IN. To be eligible for consideration, students must have resided there for at least three years. |
The Michael A. Kyle Scholarship in Medicine | Established in 2015, this scholarship is to be used for medical students at the IU School of Medicine with preference to students who are Lake County residents and with special preference to graduates of Whiting High School or George Rogers Clark High School. |
The Ritchey Scholarship Endowment | This scholarship was established in June 2000 to support recruitment scholarships. |
