Long-term Loans
The following long-term, low interest loans are available from the IU School of Medicine. Students seeking these loans must first apply for financial assistance from the IUPUI-OSFAS. To apply, students must complete an application which is available from the MSA-SFS, Medical Science Building, Room 119. Additionally, students are required to put in writing their request for consideration by detailing their total expenses and total resources for the requested loan period. The amount of the loan is based upon:
- eligibility for additional assistance, and
the availability of funds. - The IU School of Medicine loans are supplemental loans of up to $3,000, not to exceed the cost of attendance with all other financial resources.
John W. Anderson Foundation Loan Fund
Established by the Trustees of the John W. Anderson Foundation, this fund assists residents of Lake County, Ind., who demonstrate financial need. A portion of this loan is forgiven if the borrower establishes a fulltime practice in Lake County following residency.
Laura G. Childs Loan Fund
This low interest loan assists medical students in good academic standing who have financial need.
Cyrus J. Clark Memorial Fund
This fund was established in 1955 by contributions in honor of the late Dr. Clark, a longtime member of the medical school faculty. It assists junior and senior medical students who have demonstrated financial need and academic progress.
Dorothy Dipboye and Marian Hochhalter, M.D., Loan Fund
This fund was established in 1980 by the estate of the late Ms. Dorothy Dipboye in memory of Dr. Marian Hochhalter to assist female students who have financial need.

This fund was established in 1980 by the estate of the late Ms. Dorothy Dipboye in memory of Dr. Marian Hochhalter to assist female students who have financial need.
Cora C. Ensminger Loan Fund
Established in 1992 through the will of Cora C. Ensminger, who died in the 1960s, this fund assists third and fourth-year students in good academic standing.
Dr. Frank Gastineau Loan Fund
Established in 1976, this fund provides a low interest loan for a medical student in good academic standing with demonstrated financial need.
The Robert Wood Johnson Loan Fund
This fund was established in 1976 to help women, residents of specific rural counties, and minority students afford the cost of a medical education. Students must show extreme financial need to be eligible for a Robert Wood Johnson Loan.
Kellogg Medical Loan Fund
This loan fund was established in 1976 by the W. K. Kellogg Foundation of Battle Creek, Mich. Loans are to be awarded to deserving medical students.
Paul Kunschik Memorial Loan Fund
Awarded to students who demonstrate financial need and academic achievement, this fund was established in 1962 by Mrs. Gail Kunschik in memory of her husband, Paul Kunschik, who believed in the value of higher education.
Landon Loan Fund
This low interest loan fund was established in 1976 to assist medical students in good academic standing who demonstrate financial need.
Auxiliary of the Marion County Medical Society Loan Fund
Loans are awarded to residents of Indiana who are in good academic standing with demonstrated financial need. The fund was established in 1982 through generous gifts from the Auxiliary of the Marion County Medical Society.
Louis Y. Mazzini Medical Student Loan Fund
This fund was established in 1977 by Mrs. Mazzini in honor of her late husband. Loans are awarded to students who have high academic achievement and demonstrate financial need.
Almus C. and Laura L. McKelvey Memorial Fund
Established by the estate of Mrs. Goldie M. McKelvey in 1980, this fund assists students who demonstrate financial need and academic progress.
Medical School Student Loan Fund
This fund is supported by donations and anonymous gifts from individuals who wish to provide loan funds for medical students. These long-term, low interest loan funds are awarded to students in accordance with the policies and procedures established by the IU School of Medicine Fellowship and Scholarship Committee.
Robert H. and Ina M. Mohlman Loan Fund
This fund, established in 1985 by a generous gift from Robert H. Mohlman and family, assists any medical student in good academic standing who demonstrates financial need.
Guy Morford, M.D., and Mildred B. Morford Memorial Loan Fund
The fund was created in 1993 through the generosity of Guy Morford, M.D., to provide loans to deserving medical students who need financial assistance. Dr. Morford was the first anesthesiology resident of Dr. V.K. Stoelting at the IU School of Medicine.
School of Medicine Student Scholarship
This scholarship was created in 2016 from an existing loan fund that was established in 1983 and recently converted to a scholarship by the IU Foundation Compliance Committee after years of inactivity. It is the intent of the donors that the gift be used to support scholarships for students who are in good standing and have demonstrated financial need.
Shellhammer Loan Fund
This memorial loan fund was established by the friends and family of Dr. Robert H. Shellhammer. Dr. Shellhammer was a professor and assistant dean for the IU School of Medicine from 1951 until his death in 1985. Loans are made to students in good academic standing who have a demonstrated financial need.
Mabel Sledd Cunnison Scholarship
Mabel Sledd Cunnison created the Samuel D., Martha B., and Martha I. Sledd Foundation to be held in trust in response to her father’s concern, expressed during his lifetime, for the future of adequately trained Doctors of Medicine to supply the needs of our growing population and since it was also her own desire to make possible a medical education for those young men and women who have ability and wish to dedicate their lives to the medical profession, but who financial resources prohibit necessary training. At the time of her death all the trust principal and accumulated income other than that required to be expended under Article IV shall continue in trust under the name of the aforementioned Sledd Foundation as per the terms of the trust document. The Mabel Sledd Cunnison Loan Fund was originally established on August 1, 1968 and was revised on May 17, 2000 to update the donor intent to conform to current practices and circumstances. The fund can no longer be utilized for its original purpose, and the Donor now wishes to amend the title to the Mabel Sledd Cunnison Scholarship and to revise the donor intent to support a scholarship. It is the intent of the donors that the gift be used to support scholarships in the Indiana University School of Medicine based on academic achievement and demonstrated financial need.
George and Barbara Sorrells Family Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2015 by George and Barbara Sorrells Family to be used to support scholarships for medical students.
Barbara (Burgess) Sorrells completed her undergraduate degree in social work at Indiana University in 1988; and George Sorrells earned his undergraduate degree at Indiana University in 1959 and received his Doctorate of Medicine from the Indiana University School of Medicine in 1962. Following medical school, Dr. Sorrells was an intern at Hurley Hospital in Flint, Michigan and completed his pediatric residency at Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis in 1965. Dr. Sorrells served as a staff physician at the Bedford Regional Medical Center in Bedford, Indiana from 1965 to 1993; from 1993 to 1997 he had his own private practice in Bedford. Since 1997 he has worked at Southern Indiana Pediatrics and is on the visiting clinical staff at Riley Children’s Hospital. Dr. Sorrells is a member of the Clinical Advisory Committee of the state’s Hoosier Healthwise Program, the American Medical Association, the Indiana State Medical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and a member of the Dean’s Council at the Indiana University School of Medicine. In addition, Dr. Sorrells serves as the Chair of the J.O. Ritchey Society, which recognizes individuals who have made planned gift commitments to benefit the Indiana University School of Medicine. George and Barbara have been significant and exemplary supporters of the School of Medicine along with other areas of Indiana University; and their daughter, Rhonda, completed her first two years of medical school at IU School of Medicine and their other children, George, Ann and Trisha are all graduates of Indiana University.
Frank L. Steele, M.D., Tuition Loan Fund
Established in 1979 by the late Mayme P. Dennis in honor of her father, Dr. Frank L. Steele, this loan is made to assist students who demonstrate financial need.
Dorothy and Darwin Wiekamp Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2015 by Dorothy and Darwin Wiekamp to be used to support scholarships for medical students. Darwin Wiekamp and Dorothy Wiekamp have been lifelong residents of St. Joseph County and champions of higher education institutions in this area; and they have been particularly generous in providing opportunities to students from this area to assist in their pursuit of a college degree. In 2012, Dorothy Wiekamp began contributing to the Indiana University School of Medicine – South Bend as an extension of that dedication to local higher education opportunities.
Emergency Student Loan Funds
The following emergency student loan funds are available to provide small amounts of financial assistance for a brief period of time when an unforeseen financial emergency occurs. The maximum amount a student may borrow depends upon the individual circumstances and availability of funds. These loans are to be repaid in 90 days or before the end of the current academic year, whichever comes first. Most loan funds charge a minimal simple interest rate and/or contribution. Students may be denied the privilege of receiving an emergency student loan if they have been delinquent in past repayments. Students may apply for these loans at any time during the year by contacting the MSA-SFS, Medical Science Building, Room 119, or the Director of their IUSM-campus where appropriate.
Fesler Medical School Emergency Loan
Students may borrow $100 to $500 for up to 90 days through this program. The annual interest rate on these loans is 5 percent.
King Loan Fund
Established by a gift from Mr. and Mrs. Richard King, this loan is available for students at the IUSM-Muncie Campus through the Treasurer’s Office at Ball State University.
