The Pediatric Clerkship is intended to provide students a broad exposure to common medical conditions observed in children in an environment conducive to learning and for gaining knowledge that will solidify their medical education. The Clerkship is divided into two learning blocks: Outpatient service and Inpatient service. Students will spend about four weeks in each block.
On the Inpatient rotation students will experience the care of children admitted to the hospital, participate in their evaluation and treatment, and follow their progress until discharge. In some centers students will participate in rounds with residents and attending physicians, sharing in the learning experience that evolves from this team interaction. When residents are not present, students will have a more direct interaction with the attending physician. Students are assigned to a diversity of inpatient services such as General Pediatrics, Pediatric Intensive Care Units, Neonatal Intensive Care Units, and subspecialty teams.
In Outpatient rotations clinic assignments may include General Pediatrics and subspecialty clinics including GI, Endocrinology, Infectious Disease, Developmental Pediatrics, Cardiology, Pulmonology, Med-Peds, Heme/Onc, and Allergy. Student who are fluent in Spanish can be given opportunities to work in clinics that conduct all of their services in Spanish. Additionally, time may be assigned to complete learning modules or to participate in case studies and reviews. No matter which clinics students are in, the goal is to have an exciting experience learning how to care for children.
