The Health Equity Advocacy and Leadership (HEAL) competency will enable students to recognize the importance of historical, cultural, social and structural contexts of medicine and their relationship to health equity. They will become leaders and agents for change who recognize societal problems impacting local communities and health care systems including health disparities, systemic racism, bias and microaggressions. Students will utilize this knowledge to provide equitable care for diverse populations and create solutions that result in optimal health outcomes for all.
HEAL 1: Health Equity
Develop a critical awareness of the historical, cultural and social impact systems of inequity have on marginalized communities, the health system and health policy.
HEAL 2: Cultural Humility
Demonstrate an awareness of, and responsiveness to, cultural identities including gender, age, culture, race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, disability, socioeconomic status, native language or role, and develop inclusive relationships with all individuals based on compassion, honesty and respect.
HEAL 3: Advocacy and Leadership
Demonstrate advocacy and leadership skills by providing patient education, resources, or support services based on identified patient needs to promote optimal health and decrease barriers to health care.
