Introduction to Human Sexuality

This course will provide students with an introductory survey of topics in human sexuality, including sex, gender, sexual orientation, and how these factors intersect and interact. Topics covered will include: sexual and gender diversity; peri- and post-natal sex and gender development; gender identity; sexual orientation and fluidity; intersex conditions; sexual health and STI prevention; sexual pleasure; and others. Students will also have the opportunity to tour various labs and do a week of “rounds” with researcher faculty working on topics related to sex and sexuality at The Kinsey Institute.

Learning objectives:

By the end of this course, a student will be able to:

  1.  Identify and explain key concepts in the field of human sexuality (MK1)
  2. Perform a literature review of a topic related to sex, gender, and/or sexuality (MK7).
  3. Analyze and evaluate the literature within the chosen topic (MK7).

Course activities:

  1. Attend 4 weeks of lectures, in person or via Zoom (10 hours/week)
  2. Pass weekly reading and lecture comprehension quizzes (1 hour/week (20 min perlecture day, 5 days a week))
  3. Complete reading assignments: Sources: Human Sexuality: Diversity in Contemporary America textbook, and other articles, chapters, etc. as applicable
  4. Select a sexual health research topic and conduct a literature review
  5. Complete a brief class presentation on the research topic chosen, highlighting what is known and gaps in current understanding.

Estimated time distribution: 70% Lecture/Seminar and 30% Library/Research Attend 4 weeks of lectures, in person or via Zoom (10 hours/week) Pass weekly reading and lecture comprehension quizzes (1 hour/week (20 min per lecture day, 5 days a week))

Assessments:
Quizzes/Exams – Weekly reading and lecture comprehension quizzes – 50%
Literature Review – Select a sexual health research topic and conduct a literature
review with annotated bibliography – 25%
Presentation – Complete a class presentation on the research topic chosen, highlighting
what is known and gaps in current understanding, identifying relevance for research and
clinical practice – a 25%

Critical Issues in Sexuality and Health

This course builds on the Introduction to Human Sexuality course by delving deeper into issues related to human sexuality. Offered fully online via recorded lectures as part of the Kinsey Institute Continuing Education Program, students will learn from a variety of experts on diverse contemporary issues in sexuality and health. Content will examine in detail issues such as sex and gender diversity, sex and gender development, gender identity, romantic and sexual relationships, diagnostic practices related to sex and gender, and relevant psychological and biomedical treatments. The course will also critically review the history of the relationship between medicine and sex, gender, and sexuality. It concludes with an overview of contemporary best practices in the field.

  1. Demonstrate comprehension on a diverse range of contemporary issues in sexuality and health (MK1)
  2. Analyze and evaluate the literature within the chosen Scholarly Concentration project (MK7).
  3. Recognize sexual and gender diversity and commonly used terminology to integrate
    best practices for inclusive language in research and promoting care in clinical practice (ISC1).
  4. Demonstrate the ability to develop an abstract related to the Scholarly Concentration project that could be presented at a local or national-level meeting. (ISC5).

Course activities:

  1. Watch course lectures online (10 hour/week for 4 weeks).
  2. Participate in online discussion forums in Canvas (1 hour/week)
  3. Complete reading assignments
  4. Pass lecture and reading comprehension quizzes (1 hour/week)
  5. Develop a Scholarly Concentration project proposal, including:
    - Identifying, and receiving approval from, a relevant faculty mentor at The Kinsey Institute.
    - Proposing and conducting an initial literature review on the research project.
    - Create a timeline for completion of their project in consultation with their faculty mentor.
  6. Complete IU CITI education modules for social and behavioral sciences as well as biomedical research.
  7. Identify any relevant IRB regulations to sexual health research and specific scholarly concentration project (2 hours total).

Assessments:
Quizzes/Exams – Lecture and reading comprehension quizzes following each online course module – 60%
Project Proposal – Develop a Scholarly Concentration project proposal related to human sexuality and health – 25%
CITI Course – Complete IU Collaborative IRB Training Initiative online education modules – 5%
Reflective Discussion – Entries in online journals and learning logs, prompted by questions about readings and course content, to stimulate discussion among others in the course and supervising faculty – 10%
