Are you planning the exciting transition to your clerkship year? In an effort to make the transition smoother for you, we want to provide clear information regarding the Phase 2 scheduling guidelines. Here is what you need to know.
Regional Student Clerkship Choice in Indianapolis
All regional campus students (both early decision program (EDP) and standard admission) may select one Phase 2 clerkship (either four-week or eight-week) to complete in Indianapolis. The school will cover housing costs for this chosen clerkship. Please note this is simply an option but is not required as all campuses offer robust third year clerkship experiences.

No two four-week clerkships: Please note that you cannot do two four-week clerkships for a total of eight weeks. For example, selecting both psychiatry (four weeks) and neurology (four weeks) is not allowed. Housing coverage will not be provided for both.

Partial eight-week clerkship: If you choose to come to Indianapolis for part of an eight-week clerkship (e.g., surgery sub-specialty) and require housing, it still counts as your one choice. You will not be approved for additional weeks of housing for another clerkship.

Inpatient Pediatrics: Regional campuses without inpatient pediatrics may send students to Indianapolis for a four-week inpatient pediatrics rotation. Housing will be covered for these four weeks, if needed, in addition to housing for a chosen four- or eight-week clerkship.

Students who come to Indianapolis for four weeks of inpatient pediatrics are expected to complete their four weeks of outpatient pediatrics at their home campus unless the student selects pediatrics as their clerkship choice in Indianapolis as stated above.

Multiple Indianapolis clerkships: Standard admission students (not EDP students) may elect to come for more than one clerkship in Indianapolis but that is subject to the availability of rotation slots in Indianapolis. Housing will not be provided for more than one clerkship as stated above.
Timing and Availability
When you are scheduled to come to Indianapolis for your chosen clerkship depends on housing and rotation availability. Preference for housing during May–September is given to Phase 3 students who need to rotate in Indianapolis to obtain letters of recommendation for residency applications.
Campus Designation
Your campus designation in MSAS is based on where you complete most of your rotations. It also informs housing decisions if housing is requested.

Campus designations are based on the number of months spent at a campus for clinical clerkships.

The home campus of EDP students will be automatically assigned based on their EDP-campus designation. For non-EDP students, a student’s campus designation in MSAS will be based on where they are doing most of their rotations. A student’s campus designation will be used to inform housing decisions if housing is requested.

Standard admission students may choose to remain at their regional campus or transfer to another campus for their third year. Please be mindful of the above points regarding home campus designation and how that may impact housing request decisions.

Decisions regarding campus transfers should be made in consultation with regional campus leadership. Changes in home campus designation will be made during the scheduling process in conjunction with the regional coordinator at your regional campus.
Partial Year in Indianapolis
If you are completing a partial year in Indianapolis, please secure your own housing accommodations. Housing beyond one chosen clerkship will not be provided.
Rotations at other campuses (not Indianapolis)
Rotations at other campuses (not Indianapolis) should be worked out with the regional coordinator for that campus and are subject to rotation and/or housing availability and cannot be guaranteed.

If you are interested in rotating at another campus (not Indianapolis), we recommend contacting their regional coordinator early (before scheduling begins) to discuss possible opportunities.

Please be advised that students based in Indianapolis during Phase 2 may be sent to regional campuses for as many as four months (not including family medicine). Housing will be provided if an Indianapolis student must go to a regional campus for a clerkship rotation.
