The primary care track is designed to enhance the outpatient experience of residents planning a career in ambulatory general medicine while still providing a strong inpatient/subspecialty education. The track guarantees participating residents the opportunity to experience key outpatient rotations with fewer ICU or ward experiences while still providing robust training and individualized learning plan. Beginning in the PGY-2, residents are assigned a second continuity clinic that they attend during select rotations. In addition, the primary care track provides didactics in primary care-related topics and a community for support within the larger program. As part of the program, participants are encouraged to work on a personal project involving a chosen aspect of primary care educational training.
Curriculum
All residents participate in a common general internal medicine core along with additional ambulatory-based electives. Primary care track residents work with program leadership to select a site for their second continuity clinic that aligns with their career goals. They attend this second clinic during select rotations in PGY2-3. Continuity clinics are also a major focus with longitudinal patient experiences and one-on-one mentorship.
Additional Information
Categorical interns may apply for acceptance into the Primary Care Track in early spring of the PGY-1 year to commence in July of their PGY-2 year. Up to two residents can participate per class. Past Primary Care Track residents have participated in a wide range of second clinics to tailor their training experience. Prior examples include a private practice setting, safety net/FQHC clinic, lifestyle medicine, endocrinology, Spanish language focused clinic, or geriatrics primary care. Second-year and third-year residents participate in key core general program requirements along with general ambulatory blocks, sports medicine, endocrinology, dermatology and other ambulatory-based electives. Residents can also choose to participate in medical student teaching clinics during their ambulatory blocks as well as a community practice-based elective.
