The Neuropsychology Department in Psychiatry provides diagnostic evaluations for adults and older adults. Adults of any age may experience decline or impairment in memory or other thinking ability. Sometimes these difficulties arise as a result of an injury, medical problem, degenerative disease or developmental condition. Neuropsychological testing is helpful in diagnosis and treatment planning for persons with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease, head injury, stroke, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, brain tumor, IQ and personality testing, or pre-surgical evaluations for epilepsy or movement disorder.
The evaluation starts with an interview to review current symptoms and a general history. Tests of memory, attention, language, spatial and reasoning skills will be administered. In some cases, questionnaires or rating scales of mood may be included. Feedback is often provided the same day.
