Bio

Emily Meudt, MD is from De Forest, Wisconsin, and obtained her medical degree from St. George’s University and attended psychiatry residency at Indiana University.

Why Fellowship at IU?
I am originally from the Midwest. My journey to medicine took a non-traditional route and so I am very happy to be back in the Midwest at IU. I took a non-traditional journey to medicine, so it’s not surprising that I am doing a non-traditional residency. I am currently participating in the general psychiatry and child/adolescent fellowship integrated pilot program. I started fellowship as a PGY-3 instead of PGY-4 and my 3rd year of general psychiatry residency will be transposed to my 5th year. I am grateful that I was able to be given this opportunity, especially when I initially thought, “I will NEVER do child psych”. Well, that all changed intern year when I started seriously considering child psych after rotating on our inpatient unit. Looking back, I realize how happy I was to go to work in the morning and feel like I was making a difference. Now, I had to keep this close to my chest because I could never let Hamilton (a co-fellow) know that he did, indeed, convert me to child psych like he said he would in the beginning of our intern year. My favorite part about child fellowship at IU is the variety of patients we see. As someone that has a hard time pinpointing what she is interested in because she loves it all, this is great for my love of learning. I appreciate that we see just about every diagnosis both common and uncommon. As we are part of the only ranked children’s hospital in Indiana, we get referrals from patients all over the state and surrounding states. My other favorite part about fellowship and residency is that IU is truly an academic program. All of the attendings are available, open to questions, and will welcome a conversation about pathology, treatments, dispo, healthcare systems, you name it! I have never once felt like I couldn’t ask a question or work through my thought processes with them, both in child fellowship and general psychiatry residency.

Career Interests:
My interests in psychiatry, though it’s hard to narrow them down, include immunopsychiatry, addictions, advocacy, reducing stigma and creating a healing environment for children to have better health outcomes.
Outside of work:

Outside of work:
Outside of psychiatry, I enjoy spending time with my husband and dog, trying new restaurants, learning new skills, watching trash “reality” tv, planning fictional vacations, going to Costco, crochet, baking all the things, and Great British Bake Off.
