In the Department of Pediatrics at IU School of Medicine, supporting a healthy work/life balance for residents is a priority. The department strives to support resident wellness through a number of avenues including annual retreats, program-sponsored social events, faculty mentorship, and much more. Through the resident-led Social and Wellness Committees, departmental faculty and staff work to ensure that residents feel encouraged to take time to have fun together outside of the hospital.
Every year, the Pediatrics Residency Program hosts a retreat for each class that focuses on personal relaxation, team-building and professional development. Each retreat lasts one-to-two days and is located off-campus to provide a relaxed environment for education and social interaction between residents and program leaders. In addition to social activities focused on building camaraderie, each retreat is designed to target the specific needs of each level of training.
Year 1 Retreat: Becoming a Supervising Resident
Year 2 Retreat: Professional Development
Year 3 Retreat: Preparing for Practice
In addition to our annual retreats, the department’s resident-run Wellness Committee sponsors a number of efforts that support resident wellness. Wellness interest groups connect residents that enjoy similar activities (from running and biking, to beer and coffee drinking, to parenting and board games, and beyond). The wellness-related noon conferences, including pet therapy, art therapy, and chair yoga to name a few, allow residents to take a break and find balance even in the midst of a busy day on the wards. The residency program director team also leads surprise “Snow Cone Rounds” on the wards for our residents.
Pediatric residents have many opportunities to enjoy time together outside of the hospital. The resident-led Social Committee organizes a monthly “Riley Rounds,” where residents gather at a local restaurant, brewery, park, or even baseball game to enjoy food and drinks sponsored by the program. The committee also hosts an annual Intern Welcome Party where our incoming interns have the opportunity to get to know the upper level residents before the start of the new academic year. The annual holiday party is also a highlight for our residents. Fellows and attendings help cover the wards so that all residents can gather together to celebrate the holidays!
