Faculty in the Department of Pediatrics at IU School of Medicine are nationally and internationally recognized as specialists in their fields. Led by Chair Wade Clapp, MD, the department has more than 300 faculty members who are engaged in teaching, research and patient care. Many faculty members are leaders within pediatric professional organizations and research consortiums and are recognized for contributions that have improved the practice of pediatrics beyond Indiana

Teaching is at the heart of the Department of Pediatrics, and faculty are known for their warmth, expertise and excellent teaching. With their commitment to be the best so they can train the next generation of exceptional pediatricians, it’s no surprise that pediatric faculty are routinely recognized by medical students, residents and fellows for their teaching and mentorship.

Get Involved

Part of professional growth includes getting involved in committees across the health system and school. Committees represent an opportunity to participate in the work of our institution.

The Pediatrics Faculty Development Committee also plans social events each year (e.g. trivia night, annual holiday party, picnic).

Faculty Development Programs

Faculty in the Department of Pediatrics have access to a variety of school-wide and department-specific faculty development programs.

Leadership in Academic Medicine (LAMP) is a program for faculty in the second and third year of their appointment. This school-wide program teaches faculty members valuable leadership skills and is also a great way to meet other faculty from across the school.

The Faculty Development Committee provides an education series workshop that is open to all faculty members within the department.

Promotion and Tenure Support

IU School of Medicine and the Department of Pediatrics offer support, information sessions, and help to prepare for the promotion and tenure process.

Peer review is one component of the promotion and tenure process. All faculty on the clinical and tenure tracks must have a peer review of teaching included in their promotion materials.

Awards

Rich Schreiner Clinical Mentoring Award

The Rich Schreiner Clinical Mentoring Award is presented once every two years to a nominated faculty member who has demonstrated excellence in clinical mentoring. The award recognizes the efforts of the individual in fostering and contributing to the career development and academic success as well as development of the mentee’s own path to professional success. Dr. Richard L. Schreiner served as Chair of the Department and Physician-in-Chief from 1987 until his retirement in 2009. Dr. Schreiner was named the Edwin L. Gresham Professor of Pediatrics of Indiana University School of Medicine. During his tenure as chair, the department grew from 45 faculty to 250. Extramural NIH funding grew from 60th to 17th, from zero endowed chairs to 22, from 54 pediatric residents and fellows to 150. He has mentored hundreds of clinicians throughout his career and developed the clinician scientist program.

Merv Yoder Research Mentoring Award

The Merv Yoder Research Mentoring Award is presented once every two years to a nominated faculty member who has demonstrated excellence in research mentoring. The award recognizes the efforts of the individual in fostering and contributing to the research career development of the mentee as well as fostering the mentee’s own path to professional success by highlighting and promoting their research contributions. This award was created to celebrate the lifelong mentoring and encouragement provided by Dr. Mervin Yoder, the former director of the Herman B Wells Center for Pediatric Research. Dr. Yoder has trained and mentored many graduate and undergraduate students, medical students and postdoctoral fellows. His mentees have had successful academic and research careers with several of them establishing standalone research laboratories. He is the author of over 200 papers alongside his mentees.

Rising Trailblazer Award

Two Rising Trailblazer Award recipients will be selected each two-year cycle, alternating years with the Yoder and Schreiner Mentoring Awards. This award recognizes outstanding early career faculty (typically first 10 years) who are emerging trailblazers in the Department of Pediatrics. Awardees may have demonstrated exceptional early accomplishments in areas such as leadership, innovation, advocacy, research, clinical service, quality improvement, equity, teamwork and education.
