Social Justice SIG

The purpose of this organization is to expand upon the current IUSM curriculum by exposing students to topics of their interest, such as providing services to people with disabilities, how to treat people who identify as LGBTQ+, healthcare related to food insecurity, etc. Having this exposure will better prepare students for their careers in medicine as they will be more equipped to provide better services and care based on their understanding and education of various backgrounds and identities. In addition to learning about these social justice issues via events and speakers, these students will also have the opportunity to serve their communities in social-justice focused service outings to not only learn more about the issue within their own community, but also work alongside community members to gain a deepened understanding of how social justice issues affect individuals.

Spirit of Medicine SIG

The school of medicine’s literary club. Come join us to enjoy fiction, poetry, non fiction and a variety of other media. Medicine deals not only with the human body but also with the human spirit, and excelling as a physician frequently requires knowledge, experience, and skill in both domains. The Spirit of Medicine SIG will hold monthly meetings to discuss seminal readings. The ultimate goal is to provide greater awareness of spiritual and literary themes for students and to show the impact that the humanities can have on individuals in society as well as the relevance these themes may have in future clinical practice, regardless of specialty.

Sports Medicine SIG

The sports medicine SIG exposes medical students to the diverse field of sports medicine. As a fellowship track that branches from many medical specialties (orthopedics, FM, IM, peds, PM&R, EM), medical students do not typically get exposed to this subspecialty. We provide sideline shadowing experiences in the fall, students are able to particpate in the fellowship's journal club, guest speakers speak from all different specialties, and special events such as the Golden Gloves boxing tournament occur annually that students can sit ring side and help perform pre and post-fight physicals. The primary route of communication is our GroupMe. spmedsig@iu.edu

Student for a National Health Program (SNaHP)

Students for a National Health Program (SNaHP) at IU School of Medicine aims to facilitate discussion among medical students on the issue of a single payer health system and, most importantly, provide a platform for medical students to get involved in health care reform advocacy. The group focuses not only on single-payer advocacy, but also on increasing awareness of disparities related to health care access and on health care reform proposals more broadly by holding talks and advocacy activities on the direction of health care reform after the Affordable Care Act and the current bills at the state and federal levels. Additionally, SNaHP fosters opportunities for collaboration and networking with other SNaHP medical school chapters by participating in conferences and other events.
