Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Coalition

The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Coalition at IU School of Medicine strives to advocate for enhancing the medical school study body’s cultural competence through an alliance of student leadership from organizations supported by the Center for Inclusive Excellence.

These affinity organizations include:

  • Alliance
  • American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA)
  • Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association (APAMSA)
  • Latin Medical Student Association (LMSA)
  • Student National Medical Association (SNMA)

The DEI Coalition seeks to encourage, enable, and empower the IU School of Medicine community on schoolwide diversity initiatives through recommendations, projects, events, and activities in the following areas (but are not limited to):

  • Recruitment, admissions and retention
  • Campus climate
  • DEI training
  • Academic curriculum
  • Community engagement

Eligibility

All members of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion executive board must be members of the IU School of Medicine, a member of one or more of the established affinity organizations, and in good academic standing. The term limit for all executives is a max of two years. One person cannot hold up to two positions with one exception: one person can serve as an Affinity Group Liaison and a Coalition Executive Positions. Available positions include:

  • Vice-President of Recruitment, Admissions, and Retention (2)
  • Vice-President of Campus Climate (1)
  • Vice-President of DEI Training (1)
  • Vice-President of Academic Curriculum (1)
  • Vice-President of Community Engagement (1)
  • Vice-President of Social Media and Communications (1)
  • Vice-President of Collaboration and Finance (1)
  • DEI Coalition Secretary (1)

Term length: One year

Accepts applications from current rising second, third and fourth-year students.

Executive Board Positions

Shared responsibility for all DEI Coalition executive positions 

  • Advocate for DEI initiatives on behalf of students.  
  • Maintain communication with the DEI Coalition Chair in regard to upcoming programming, concerns, and general updates.
  • Attend monthly Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Coalition meetings either in person or via a teleconferencing platform.  
  • Conduct a self-assessment describing accomplishments relative to developed goals and chartered responsibilities, including identifying challenges and barriers encountered during the period and recommendations for the next chair.  

Vice-President of Administrative Affairs

The role of the coalition member is the following: 

  • Share responsibilities with the Chair, including representing the DEI Coalition in its affairs when the Chair is unavailable. 
  • Serve as the DEI Coalition Representative in the Wellness Coalition.

Vice-President of Recruitment, Retention, and Promotions

The role of the coalition member is the following: 

  • Be responsible for providing students’ perspectives on DEI initiatives with recruitment, admissions, and retention. 
  • Lead, promote, and recruit for the Recruitment, Admissions, and Retention Committee. 
  • Maintain communication with the Associate Director of Admissions in regard to, but not limited to, Interview Day Panels. 
  • Maintain communication with the Assistant Dean of Holistic Success and Advocacy, in regard to, but not limited to retention programming.

Vice-President of Campus Climate 

The role of the coalition member is the following: 

  • Advocate for DEI efforts specific to each of the 9 campuses for the enhancements of which include, but are not limited to:
    • Student Support
    • Campus and Student Resources
    • Campus and Student Concerns 
    • Faculty Representation
    • Student Mentorship 
  • Lead, promote, and recruit for the Campus Climate Committee, consisting of one to two regional representatives from each regional campus. The regional representatives positions will be interviewed during Fall Interview Day and will serve a one-year term.
  • Conduct interviews for Fall Interview Day for the Campus Climate Committee.

Vice-President of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Training

The role of the coalition member is the following:  

  • Oversee student involvement, gap identification, and propose changes in DEI Training activities throughout the school community.  
  • Lead, promote, and recruit for the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Training Committee.

Vice-President of Academic Curriculum 

The role of the coalition member is the following:  

  • Represent the students who fall under the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Coalition in the curricular discussions and work to develop curricular enhancements that can be integrated into students’ curricula. This includes, but is not limited to, being the DEI representative in the Curriculum Coalition.  
  • Lead, promote, and recruit for the Academic Curriculum Committee.

Vice-President of Community Engagement 

The role of the coalition member is the following:  

  • Organize at least one Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Coalition Community Engagement per semester. The semesters are defined as Fall (August – December) and Spring (January – May).  
  • Serve as the DEI Representative on the Service Learning Coalition (SLC) and attend the SLC Coalition monthly meetings. 
  • Lead, promote, and recruit for the Community Engagement Committee.

Vice-President of Social Media and Communications 

The role of the coalition member is the following:  

  • Maintain an online presence for the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Coalition, including, but not limited to: 
    • Maintenance of DEI Coalition webpage  
    • Advertisement of DEI events and Dissemination of event flyers  
    • Oversee Instagram and Twitter accounts  
  • Maintain communication with the school's communications department in regard to, but not limited to, DEI representation communication efforts.  
  • Lead, promote, and recruit for the Social Media and Communications Committee.

Vice-President of Collaboration and Finance 

The role of the coalition member is the following:  

  • Facilitate communication amongst the DEI Coalition Vice-Presidents and DEI Liaisons to ensure DEI initiatives with appropriate funding and encourage comradery.  
  • Earn at least 1 sponsorship per semester and organize fundraisers for DEI to support students and communities of color within the state of Indiana. 
  • Increase exposure of DEI to large corporations in the state of Indiana through sponsorship/fundraisers.  
  • Lead, promote, and recruit for the Collaboration and Finance Committee.

Secretary 

The role of the coalition member is the following:  

  • Serve as the scribe at each Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion meeting. 
  • Disseminate meeting minutes within 48 hours of conclusion.  
  • Assist with maintaining an up-to-date calendar of events and submission to MD Student News.  
  • Assist with maintaining and organizing the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Outlook Drive site.
