Research

Researchers in the Division of Pulmonary Medicine at IU School of Medicine pursue a variety of basic, translational and clinical research projects in the fields of pulmonary and critical care medicine. Studies are conducted in facilities located on the school’s Indianapolis campus, its affiliated hospitals and in collaboration with investigators in other IU School of Medicine divisions and centers and at other academic institutions. Division research is funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Veterans Affairs, non-profit organizations, foundations and industry.

Research Resources

Resources for the Division of Pulmonary Medicine include an RT-PCR machine, Thermal Cycler, Flow Cytometry equipment, an ECIS machine, Cytospin, Biosafety Cabinets and cell culture equipment, an Animal Procedure/Harvest Room, and a Flexivent PFT system. Additional study-specific resources are available in individual faculty PI labs.

T32 Research Training Program

The Division offers a T32 Research Training Program that is administered jointly with the Division of Pediatric Pulmonary, Allergy and Sleep Medicine. Research fellows have the opportunity to pursue additional training through the Clinical Investigation and Translational Education (CITE) Program or the Translational Science Education Program.

Focus Areas

Investigators in the Division of Pulmonary Medicine perform research in the following areas:

Research in cyctic fibrosis is an integral part of the Adult Cystic Fibrosis Clinic at IU School of Medicine, one of many sites that participate in the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s Therapeutic Development Network (TDN), the largest cystic fibrosis clinical trials network in the world. Check the CF Clinical Trial Finder for more information on currently enrolling studies.

Investigators in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Delirium group conduct randomized clinical trials and provides follow-up care for survivors of ICU Care.

Lung Cancer Investigators within the Division of Pulmonary Medicine at IU School of Medicine are involved in basic, translational and clinical research projects to improve detection, diagnosis and treatment of lung cancers for all those at risk.

Research in Lung Immunology and Lung Microbiome at IU School of Medicine focus on how HIV impairs pulmonary host immunity and leads to pulmonary complications often seen in this patient population.

Researchers focused on pulmonary hypertension within the Division of Pulmonary Medicine at IU School of Medicine pursue NIH and VA-funded basic, translational and clinical research projects in pulmonary vascular disease and right heart failure.
