Indiana University School of Medicine Urologists provide exceptional patient care through Indiana University Health. The department pioneered the use of new prostate cancer treatments in the United States over the last several decades. Patients from all over the world travel to Indianapolis for groundbreaking, innovative procedures performed by physicians with IU School of Medicine Department of Urology.
Prostatectomy
Several treatment options exist for aggressive tumors, including nerve-sparing prostatectomy, which is the complete removal of the prostate with preservation of nerves for urinary control and erections. A prostatectomy can be adjusted based on the size and location of the cancer. IU School of Medicine urologists are experienced in robot-assisted prostatectomy, which is a minimally-invasive procedure using the da Vinci robotic surgery system. This procedure requires small incisions and helps patients recover faster.
HIFU
High intensity focused ultrasound, or HIFU, is a non-invasive treatment for prostate cancer. Urologists at IU School of Medicine helped develop the technology in the 1990s and were the first to perform the treatment in the United States as part of a clinical trial. HIFU allows precise application of heat to destroy cancer tissue with low risk of side effects, no radiation and no incisions.
