Gynecologic Oncology Fellowship

Sharon E. Robertson, MD, PhD, director of the gynecologic oncology fellowship program at Indiana University, consults with a patient.

The Indiana University School of Medicine Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology offers a three year fellowship in gynecologic oncology. The program is designed to prepare physicians in providing the full spectrum of patient care and consultation, from the time of diagnosis to surgery and chemotherapy, while providing guidance to residents. Fellows will complete two years of clinical training and one year of research. The program was accredited in February 2025 by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and is the only gynecologic oncology fellowship program in Indiana.

Clinical Experience

Gynecologic oncology fellows will participate in providing clinical care to patients during their first and third year of fellowship at one of three of our locations, including the Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center, Eskenazi Health and the IU Health Joe & Shelly Schwarz Cancer Center at IU Health North Hospital. Fellows will oversee the care of patients with gynecologic cancers during their entire cancer journey. This subspecialty focuses on cancers of all reproductive organs, including cervical cancer, fallopian tube cancer, ovarian cancer, uterine cancer, vaginal cancer and vulvar cancer. Fellows will gain experience working on laparoscopic, robotic and complex surgical cases and will administer chemotherapy. They will also work closely with a variety of specialists, including those in gynecologic pathology, urology, radiation oncology and palliative care. As a top referral center for the state, fellows will treat patients from a variety of populations, including those from rural and urban communities who may present unique challenges regarding access to care and advanced stage of disease.

Educational Experience

Gynecologic oncology fellows will participate in weekly tumor board and pre-operative conferences. Additionally, fellows will have weekly didactic sessions and conferences led by gynecologic oncology faculty. Journal clubs and morbidity and mortality conferences will be held quarterly.

Research Experience

Gynecologic oncology fellows at Indiana University School of Medicine are part of a robust research program anchored by the Indiana University Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center, which was designated as a National Cancer Institute designated cancer center in 2019. As a NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center, the IU Simon Cancer Center is among the nation’s top cancer centers to provide the latest research and therapies available. Selected fellows of the program will participate in a research year during their second year of fellowship, where they gain experience in clinical trial design and enrollment working alongside seasoned physician scientists. They will also have an opportunity to present posters and presentations at national scientific meetings. Our gynecologic research portfolio expands across IU campuses, including a strong Ob/Gyn faculty presence in Bloomington and Indianapolis. Our faculty are also part of large research networks, including NRG Oncology, GOG Partners and the Big Ten Cancer Research Consortium that support multi-institutional clinical and translational research.
