Faculty Research

Faculty investigators in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology conduct collaborative research across a broad spectrum of women’s health issues. Investigators have been awarded numerous highly competitive grants from a variety of funding agencies, including the National Institutes of Health, and have published results from these various projects in several high impact peer-reviewed journals. In addition, some of the research findings here have contributed to practice changes worldwide in women’s health.

Hawkins Lab

Investigators in the Hawkins laboratory use next generation sequencing, mouse models, 3D bioprinting, and human samples to study benign and malignant diseases of the female reproductive tract, including endometriosis, endometriosis-associated ovarian cancer, endometrial dysfunction, and endometrial cancer.

Xu Lab

The Xu Lab has pioneered research in the role of lipid signaling molecules in ovarian cancer and has identified the first lipid growth factor in ovarian cancer cells. These investigators focus on gynecologic oncology, especially the development and progression of gynecologic cancers at the molecular level.

  • General Obstetrics and Gynecology
    The Division of General Obstetrics and Gynecology is a leader in clinical research. Research efforts include studies of genetics and pharmacology, personalized medicine in pregnancy, prevention of pre-term birth, reversible contraceptive methods, patient-physician communication and shared decision-making and health care delivery and teaching methods. Research performed by members of this division has garnered several prestigious national awards.
  • Gynecologic Oncology
    In association with NRG Oncology and the Gynecologic Oncology Group Foundation, the Gynecologic Oncology Division actively participates in many different clinical trials protocols. Pre-clinical and animal studies of gynecologic malignancies focus primarily on the development and progression of gynecologic cancers at the molecular level. Discovering new and effective diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers remains the main goal of cancer-based laboratory research. Explore the list of current trials.
  • Maternal Fetal Medicine
    The Maternal Fetal Medicine Division researches ways to care for women with high-risk pregnancies. The division has a variety of active clinical trials and laboratories focusing on clinical and translational research methods.


  • Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery
    Faculty in the Division of Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery research new ways to provide surgical care to women that leads to less pain and a shorter recovery time.
