Maternal and Pediatric Precision in Therapeutics Hub

The Maternal and Pediatric Precision in Therapeutics (MPRINT) Hub is a national collaboration between various universities, health systems and organizations. It serves as a national resource to improve pediatric and maternal research outcomes.

MPRINT Hub facilitates therapeutics-focused research in obstetrics, lactation and pediatrics while enhancing the inclusion of people with disabilities. By providing research support, funding and guidance, MPRINT Hub makes important research discoveries possible and strengthens the quality of work researchers perform.

Four academic sites are currently affiliated with MPRINT. Indiana University faculty serve as leaders for the Indiana University-Ohio State University MPRINT Data and Model Knowledge Research Coordination Center (IU-OSU MPRINT DMKRCC). The DMKRCC focuses on coordinating hub activities, providing educational opportunities and building collaborations.

MPRINT Hub provides support at each step in the research process. MPRINT Hub was funded in September 2021 by a grant from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.

Faculty-led Research Cores

A cornerstone of MPRINT is the research cores within MPRINT Hub. These cores provide specific training and hone researchers’ skills within the core faculty’s areas of expertise. Two research cores housed at IU School of Medicine include the Pharmacometrics and Clinical Trial Design Core and Real-World Evidence Core.

  • Sara Quinney, PharmD, PhD (IU School of Medicine) and Rob Bies, PharmD, PhD (University at Buffalo) lead the Pharmacometrics and Clinical Trial Design Core. This core provides educational resources and assistance to investigators to support pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic modeling in maternal and pediatric populations. Faculty have expertise in physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) modeling and population pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (popPK/PD) modeling, clinical trial design, bioinformatics and biostatistics.

  • Shaun Grannis, MD (IU School of Medicine) and Christopher Bartlett, PhD (Nationwide Children’s Hospital) lead the Real-World Evidence Core. This core integrates maternal-child data from multiple hospital systems and other networks to support research in maternal-pediatric pharmacology. Additionally, the core brings together experts from Regenstrief Institute, the Indiana Health Information Exchange (IHIE) and information technology groups across partner health care systems, Nationwide Children’s Hospital and Ohio State University.

COPPER

Led by David Haas, MD, and Sara Quinney, PharmD, PhD, the Collaborative Online Perinatal and Pediatric Repository (COPPER) is a centralized listing of biobanks and sources of biospecimens and data, making research and scientific advancements easier.

Knowledgebase

Led by Lang Li, PhD, and Sara Quinney, PharmD, PhD, the MPRINT Knowledgebase gathers and organizes data and resources on pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, pharmacogenetics, pediatric ontogeny and physiological changes.

Sara Quinney, PharmD, PhD

Sara Quinney, PharmD, PhD, is a Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Quinney’s research combines in vitro bench-based wet lab studies, in vivo clinical trials and in silico pharmacokinetic models to explore factors that affect drug pharmacokinetics and responses. Her work primarily focuses on tailoring drug therapy for specific populations, particularly on understanding alterations in drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics during pregnancy. Quinney has nearly 200 scholarly publications and is renowned for her comprehensive research methods. She is the PI for the MPRINT work at Indiana University School of Medicine.
