The Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship provides hands-on scanning experience alongside ultrasound faculty and provides clinical training among a diverse, pathology-rich population.

Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship

Dr. Rob Ferre teaches residents how to perform ultrasound.

The Indiana University School of Medicine Department of Emergency Medicine is excited to offer fellowship training in emergency ultrasound. Each year, our emergency ultrasound fellowship program has two openings for emergency physicians who have completed an emergency medicine residency training program. We also have a pediatric emergency ultrasound fellowship program that has one opening annually for a pediatric emergency physician who has completed a fellowship in pediatric emergency medicine.

How to Apply

Applicants for our emergency ultrasound fellowship program must be on track to graduate from an ACGME-accredited emergency medicine fellowship program.

Division

Both fellowship programs draw from the expertise of one of the largest emergency medicine ultrasound divisions in the country. The Department of Emergency Medicine Division of Emergency Ultrasound has seven emergency physicians and one pediatric emergency physician — all with fellowship training. The division has a robust training program for practicing academic and community emergency physicians. We have facilitated the training of more than 150 emergency physicians across 10 different hospitals in the state of Indiana. Division leaders also oversee the curriculum and integration of point of care ultrasound within IU School of Medicine and are actively building a point of care ultrasound training platform for other IU School of Medicine graduate medical education programs.

Clinical Experience and Facilities

The Department of Emergency Medicine staffs 10 emergency departments across the state of Indiana. The majority of clinical scanning will take place at one of three sites:

  • Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Health: County hospital and Level 1 Trauma Center (100,000 visits per year)
  • IU Health Methodist Hospital: Flagship hospital for the Indiana University Health system and Level 1 Trauma Center (95,000 visits per year)
  • Riley Hospital at IU Health: The largest pediatric hospital in Indiana and a Level 1 Trauma Center (50,000 visits per year).

Additional training occurs at our state-of-the-art simulation center located within two miles of all three hospitals. Fellows also have the opportunity to spend two to four weeks in Kathmandu, Nepal, providing POCUS training for our sister emergency medicine training program.

How to Apply

Both the emergency ultrasound and pediatric emergency ultrasound fellowship programs are part of the Society of Clinical Ultrasound Fellowships and use the EUSfellowships.com application process and the associated NRMP match as the sole method for application to the program.
