Nephrology Clinical Care

Nephrologists at IU School of Medicine are committed to the research, treatment and prevention of kidney diseases, including acute and chronic renal failure, complications of chronic dialysis treatment, hypertension, kidney stones, and cystic disease. Faculty physicians in this division believe it is important for patients to recognize their ability to remain in control of their lives and are committed to providing patients with outstanding care and the therapy that best fits patients’ lifestyles.

Facilities

Advanced nephrology programs are available at IU Health University, Methodist, North, West and Saxony hospitals as well as the Roudebush VA Medical Center and Eskenazi Health. Outpatient nephrology care is provided at IU Health University Hospital, IU Health Physicians Northside Kidney Center, IU Health Methodist, IU Health West, the VA Renal Clinic and Wishard Special Medicine Clinic. Dialysis centers are available at IU Health University Hospital’s Incenter Dialysis, the IU Health Adult Dialysis Center and IU Health Home Dialysis.

The IU Health Physicians Adult Kidney Transplant Program is located in Indianapolis at IU Health University Hospital with a pediatric counterpart located at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health. The program performs more than 220 kidney and 60 pancreas transplants per year, with expertise in researching the transplantation of highly sensitized and difficult-to-transplant patients.

The team participates in both regional and national paired donation programs and provides a well-established living donor (kidney) program with 45-50 percent of kidney transplants done annually from living donors—both directed and non-directed.

Outreach clinics for evaluation of pre-kidney transplant patients are held in Evansville, Merrillville, Lafayette , South Bend and Fort Wayne as well as at IU Health University Hospital in Indianapolis. The transplant team includes experienced nephrologists and surgeons with extensive experience in the care of the pre-transplant and transplant patient.
