IU School of Medicine Geriatrics strives to be a local, national and international leader in improving the health and vitality of older adults through excellence and innovation in research, education and clinical care.

The geriatrics team is transforming health care to support the efforts of health care providers, systems, educators, patients, families and policy makers to promote successful aging and person-centered care for older adults.

As part of its mission, the IU School of Medicine Geriatrics program supports a robust education program for residents and fellows.

John A. Hartford Foundation Center of Excellence in Geriatric Medicine

IU School of Medicine Geriatrics has been recognized by the John A. Hartford Foundation as one of 24 Centers of Excellence. Founded in 1929, the John A. Hartford Foundation is a committed champion of training, research and service system innovations that promote the health and independence of America’s older adults.

Medical Student Education

Medical students begin training to care for older adults in the first-year MD curriculum.

Residency

Internal Medicine residents take a Core Geriatrics Rotation and can elect to receive additional training in an Advanced Geriatrics Rotation.

Fellowship

Fellows receive training and mentorship in a collegial environment that allows them to treat patients across the continuum of care at local hospitals.

Geriatrics Research

The Center for Aging Research pursues a wide variety of research topics that affect the aging population, including brain health, decision-making, physical fitness, transitional care, nursing home care, and medication.
