49AN706 - ANESTHESIA

Description Only students going into Anesthesia as their specialty are approved to sign up for this course. The St. Vincent Anesthesia elective will consist of daily reading, an airway workshop, working in the OR one on one with an anesthesiologist, and a quiz at the end of the month. The educational focus will be on airway, fluids, autonomics, and cardiovascular physiology with additional topics available as desired by the student. Students should expect to get more than just intubation experience and should be prepared for daily didactics and required reading throughout the month. This is a great course to improve the understanding of private practice anesthesia, general knowledge on the previous topics mentioned, and procedural skills. Goal: Improve understanding anesthesia as a profession, improve knowledge on general medicine topics, and improve procedural skills.
Students will be exposed to a variety of facets of pediatric anesthesia. The 2-week includes predominantly OR anesthesia. The student will also spend some time with Certified Child Life Specialists, Acute Pain Service, Chronic Pain Service, and Preoperative Evaluation clinic as time permits. Book chapters and review articles are provided for most of these activities.
Student will learn about data collection for clinical research, including building the data collection tools and analyzing the data. Student will also learn to write an IRB protocol and understand the process behind a clinical research.
The field of Anesthesiology, like most fields, has many set processes that may benefit from quality improvement methodologies. Here at University Hospital, there are multiple opportunities to participate in these activities. Upon taking this course, the student will be taught lean six sigma which is a QI methodology used for improving process accuracy and also efficiency. The student would be working directly with the Chief Quality and Safety Director (Kevin MBackfish-White, MD) in doing this. Six Sigma methodology would be taught to the medical student either by zoom or by a set of power points. The student will be offered several different projects and one will be chosen. Lean six sigma will then be applied and hopefully, a new process will be implemented. In some cases, a student may be continuing the work of another as some projects will extend past two weeks.
Operating Room experience in all types of anesthesia will be provided in this elective. The practical training and experience will be complemented by lectures and departmental conferences. Students will be paired individually with a resident to discuss intra-operative management of specific cases and in addition, learn the skills of veni-puncture, peripheral venous catheter insertion, bag-mask ventilation, endotracheal intubation, placement of laryngeal mask airway, and observation of intra-arterial line and central venous line placement.
Students will also participate in the Simulator Lab where acute crises in the OR are presented. Students are expected to be engaged in the clinical intra-operative management of patients including performing the above procedures and supplementing this elective with the suggested reading materials. Further information about this elective is available at the departmental chairman's office in Fesler Hall. Assignment to specific teaching hospitals will be arranged by the course director following the senior elective matching program; requests for a specific hospital can be made but are not guaranteed to be honored. Please note: This is a two-week (2-credit) elective.
93AN712 - ANESTHESIA MEDICAL EDUCATION RESEARCH PROJECT (TWO-WEEK ELECTIVE)

During this elective, you will be introduced to medical education research in the field of anesthesiology and/or anesthesia simulation. You will complete a research project during this elective that can be written on your CV and placed under the research box in your ERAS residency application. If you are interested, this smaller research project can be turned into a poster presentation or publication. Possible poster presentation locations include Indiana Society of Anesthesiologists Meeting, American Society of Anesthesiologists Meeting, Society of Education in Anesthesia Meeting, or International Meeting on Simulation in Healthcare.
The discipline of anesthesia is closely connected with critical care medicine. Most often, students interested in a career in anesthesia often experience the operating room and intensive care unit in separate clinical experiences. This elective allows for students to experience both during a two-week elective. Students will spend one week with a critical care trained anesthesiologist on service caring for patients in the surgical intensive care unit (SICU). During the second week, students will have the opportunity to work with anesthesia residents and faculty in the operating room delivering clinical anesthesia to surgical patients.
Introduce the student to Pain Medicine through participation in the evaluation and treatment of patients seen in the Indiana University Pain Medicine Center at University Hospital. Students will gain exposure to the appropriate use of pain medications, injections, and advanced pain therapies such as spinal cord stimulators and pain pumps. The rotation consists primarily of outpatient chronic pain management, however, inpatient consults are also evaluated. Students are able to see patients across a wide range of painful diagnoses including cancer pain, acute post-operative pain, chronic post-operative pain (i.e. failed back surgery), and other non-malignant pain syndromes.
This elective will introduce the student to Pain management through participation in the evaluation and treatment of patients seen at the Richard L Roudebush VA Medical Center in Indianapolis. Students will gain exposure to a vast variety of interventional pain procedures including the most advanced procedures in Pain Management e.g.: Spinal cord stimulators, implanted pain pumps, Radiofrequency ablations, Kyphoplasty, and MILD procedures.
The rotation will consist of outpatient chronic pain management also, inpatient consults are evaluated regularly. In addition, students will get exposure to acute postoperative pain management and different regional anesthesia techniques.
