Faculty Research

The Department of Anesthesia recognizes research as the foundation of the academic program. The overarching goal of department’s research programs is to improve the quality of patient care in perioperative and pain medicine. Such goals are achieved by successful competition for research funding and by cross-disciplinary research programs that include faculty, fellows, residents and students.

Faculty of IU School of Medicine Department of Anesthesia participate in multidisciplinary research with emphasis on pharmacogenomics of opioids, personalized pain management, mechanisms of chronic pain and traumatic brain injury. Research in the department is conducted in facilities located on the school’s Indianapolis campus and funded by the National Institutes of Health, Department of Defense, Department of Veterans Affairs, Indiana State Department of Health, non-profit organizations, foundations and industry.

The research mission of the Department of Anesthesia is to advance medical science and improve clinical care by conducting state-of-the art pre-clinical, clinical and translational research. The Department of Anesthesia is recognized as a leader in innovative research programs and the department’s investigators participate in the training of residents and fellows, helping to attract top-tier faculty and increase cross-disciplinary collaborations at both the basic- and clinical-research levels to transform health in Indiana and beyond.

Newly discovered alteration of brain network condition could possibly predict extremely painful vaso-occlusive crisis in patients with sickle cell disease

A new study led by Indiana University School of Medicine researchers found a brain network condition called “explosive synchronization” could be the cause of extreme pain crises in people with sickle cell disease.
