Clinical Care

The Division of Developmental Medicine conducts approximately 10,000 outpatient visits per year.  The division also has a robust complex care inpatient service housed within Riley Hospital. IU School of Medicine’s partnership with IU Health creates extensive clinical opportunities for faculty and learners of all stages. Faculty clinicians are employed by both IU School of Medicine and IU Health Physicians practice group. This employment partnership encourages faculty to focus on both clinical care and education of learners, including medical students, residents and fellows.

Optimized Clinical Care

Optimized Clinical Training

Both inpatient and outpatient rotations are thoughtfully designed to optimize the learner experience. While on the inpatient service, learners participate as part of an interdisciplinary team; they attend morning and afternoon rounds, research patient conditions, communicate with families and attend regularly scheduled didactics. In the outpatient setting, learners are exposed to a variety of diagnoses and have the opportunity to participate in the care of medically complex patients. Learners may be asked to obtain a family history, complete a physical exam, determine differential diagnoses and develop a plan of care under the direction of an assigned faculty member.

Diversified Clinical Exposure

An interdisciplinary team approach brings together pediatric specialists who work closely with family, primary care providers and community health resources to ensure children receive the care and services they need to thrive and reach their full potential. Clinicians provide newborn follow-up for babies who spent time in a newborn intensive care unit and for children with spina bifida, cerebral palsy and Down Syndrome, among others.

Outpatient services include the following clinics and programs: Developmental, Behavioral, Down Syndrome, Feeding Team, Newborn Follow-Up/Infant Growth and Development, International Adoption, Cerebral Palsy, and Spina Bifida.

Patients are seen at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health, Riley Children’s Specialists offices in Indianapolis, Riley Children’s Specialists offices in Bloomington, IN and at Beacon Health Systems in South Bend, IN.

Early Evaluation Hubs for Pediatric Neurodevelopment

The Neurodevelopmental Behavioral System of Care helps train pediatricians and primary care physicians throughout Indiana to recognize the signs of autism and other developmental delays in children. With a confirmed diagnosis, families can more easily access early intervention programs.
