The Department of Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery at IU School of Medicine offers a one-year Laryngology fellowship, designed to provide comprehensive training in evaluation and management of voice, airway and swallowing disorders.
One of the unique aspects of this program is the ability to train with multiple different providers who all come from different training background; this not only means the fellow will be very busy clinically, but will also receive multiple different approaches to solving clinical problems. There are currently three laryngology physicians and four speech pathologists that are part of the IU Health Voice Center. The fellow will be exposed to all aspects of laryngology care from trauma to tracheal resections to cancer resections; however, all three laryngologists view care of the voice as the primary interest.
The Indiana University Health system is one of the largest health systems in the country. The clinical fellowship experience will primarily be at Methodist Hospital (flagship hospital in the system and a level 1 trauma center) and IU North Hospital (a suburban hospital in Carmel, Indiana). Care is also provided for patients at Eskenazi Hospital (county hospital and level 1 trauma center) and with patients at Riley Children’s Hospital; if the fellow is interested in pediatric laryngology more exposure at this great facility can be arranged.
Another unique aspect of the program is the research opportunities available. Stacey Halum, MD is one of the few laryngologists in the country with multiple NIH grants and Rita Patel, PhD, SLP also has several well funded projects on the speech pathology side. A second SLP/PhD recently joined the department and collaborating with him could be very fruitful. The fellow will get dedicated time for research and our hope is that this will be interesting and provide a foundation for a future academic career.
