Faculty hired into the research scientist non-tenure track advance in rank based on excellence in research. Achievement of excellence is based on criteria similar to tenure track faculty with research as their area of excellence. Many faculty on this track are associated with a tenure track faculty member who funds part or all of the salary and provides research space; and some research track faculty have administrative roles providing a high degree of service to the research mission, such as leadership of a core. This is taken into consideration in the assessment of independence.

Research Scientist Track Timeline
There is no set timeline for promotion on this track. Faculty have the flexibility to seek promotion when they’re ready and are encouraged to discuss readiness with their supervisor each year during their annual faculty review.
