Dermatopathology Fellowship

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine is accepting applications for an ACGME-accredited one-year fellowship in dermatopathology. The position focuses on obtaining excellent diagnostic skills in dermatopathology and provides ample opportunities for teaching, research, and interdepartmental collaboration.

The Division of Dermatopathology is housed in a world-class, dedicated core pathology laboratory that is located on the beautiful Indianapolis central canal and cultural trail. Cutaneous specimens (more than 17,000 cases annually) are received from the five hospitals on the academic health campus (Indiana University Hospital, Methodist Hospital, Eskenazi Hospital, Riley Children’s Hospital, and Roudebush Veterans Affairs Hospital), other hospitals in the state-wide IU Health network, and private dermatology practices. A robust volume of consultation cases are received from Indiana and surrounding states. Our in-house and consultation cases include a mix of challenging melanocytic neoplasms, rare superficial mesenchymal tumors, various cutaneous lymphomas and complex rashes.

Our seven experienced faculty dermatopathologists within the Department of Pathology train in histomorphology, immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, immunofluorescence, and molecular interpretation. The Department of Dermatology also provides clinical dermatology training and patient care at the five hospitals on the academic health campus and at numerous outreach clinics.

In addition to daily slide review and clinical dermatology training, educational content includes weekly lectures and unknowns conferences, bi-monthly Dermatology Grand Rounds, weekly melanoma conferences, weekly journal clubs, intradepartmental QA conferences, and attendance at national meetings. Additional exposure and training in soft tissue pathology, hematopathology, cytopathology, and surgical pathology is readily available from subspecialty-trained experts in the Department of Pathology. Fellows are strongly encouraged to participate in ongoing research projects in the division.

Fellows are also encouraged to contribute to our locally developed publicly available digital slide archive. These digital slides are used for educational and research purposes.

Admissions

Applicants from pathology and dermatology backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Prior to the start of fellowship, incoming fellows must be board eligible for AP/CP or AP, or for dermatology. Stipends are commensurate with the level of postgraduate training. The application deadline is Aug. 31, 22 months prior to the start of fellowship. Applicants should email application materials (standardized CAP fellowship application, curriculum vitae, personal statement and three letters of reference) to Cailin Harris, fellowship coordinator.
