Residency Benefits

At the institutional and departmental levels, the Pathology residency program offers graduate medical education trainees a comprehensive and highly competitive benefits package. In addition to the generous benefits package that IU School of Medicine provides to resident physicians as employees, Pathology residents receive the additional professional development funds, equipment, paid time off and other support.

Professional Development Funds

Professional development funds may be used for approved educational expenses and to offset the cost of USMLE Step 3. Funds may also be used to cover expenses associated with professional meetings and educational conferences.

Resident Laptops

The Pathology residency program provides each resident with an IU School of Medicine laptop that may be used for the duration of training. The laptops are provided at no cost to each resident.

Presentation Support Funds

To encourage and support research participation, the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Science provides residents with $1000 for the first presentation made at a national meeting. Resident can earn $500 for each additional presentation (limited to three total presentations) given at the same meeting. For each meeting, residents have the opportunity to earn up to $2000 in funding.

Paid Time Off

All residents are eligible for four weeks (20 business days) of paid vacation during each PGY. Pathology residents also receive ten personal days to be used throughout the duration of their residency. This time is intended to provide additional time for personal appointments, illness, emergencies, and similar needs. The department also allows residents additional days off for interviews, required exams, and educational conferences.
