Research Labs

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine houses numerous cutting-edge research laboratories investigating a wide range of diseases and biological processes. Our labs leverage the latest technologies and computational approaches to unravel the molecular underpinnings of pathogenesis, develop novel diagnostics and therapeutics, and advance disease prevention strategies. With expertise spanning cancer, neurodegenerative disorders, infectious diseases, and more, our researchers are making groundbreaking discoveries that improve human health. Explore our diverse research areas and learn about the innovative work happening in our labs.

Bakas Lab

Dr. Spyridon Bakas researches advanced computational algorithms for development, application, and benchmarking in medical imaging.

Bellail Lab

Dr. Anita C. Bellail’s research is centered on the post-translational modifications of ubiquitin (UB) and small ubiquitin-like modifier-1 (SUMO1).

Du Lab

The primary research focus of Dr. Du's laboratory is to identify the cellular and molecular mechanisms that affect inflammatory cells.

Ghetti Lab

Bernardino Ghetti, MD, is the founder of the Indiana Alzheimer Disease Center and researches neurodegenerative dementias.

Hao Lab

Dr. Hao and Dr. Bellail have been collaborating on research on protein ubiquitination and degradation in human diseases.

Katerndahl Lab

Dr. Casey Katerndahl's lab investigates molecular mechanisms driving the pathogenesis of Acute Myeloid Leukemia.

Hurwitz Lab

Dr. Stephanie Hurwitz's lab studies how hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells interact with the bone marrow microenvironment.

Newell Lab

Kathy L. Newell, MD is the C. and Lucile L. Kahn Professor of Alzheimer's Disease Research and Education.

Relich Lab

The Relich Laboratory aims to develop accurate, precise, inexpensive, and rapidly deployable diagnostics for a number of emerging viruses.

Sandusky Lab

Dr. Sandusky's pathology lab supports researchers with histology, immunohistochemistry, and image analysis from pilots to trials.

Vidal Lab

The Vidal lab studies neurodegenerative diseases, focusing on protein misfolding, pathology, and shared molecular mechanisms.

Yan Lab

The Yan lab is currently focused on two lines of research: anti-cancer immunity and advanced techniques for lung cancer diagnosis and prognosis.
