The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine proudly supports pathology education and training within our impressive facility in Indianapolis, IN. Our observership program accepts highly qualified international and national physicians seeking to further their pathology experiences. Our program offers physicians the opportunity to observe pathologists, residents and fellows in their day-to-day work responsibilities and educational sessions within our fast-paced laboratory.
An observership in our laboratory exposes physicians to four full weeks of clinical and didactic experiences. Observers must be responsible for their own lodging, travel, meals, visas, etc. While we do not charge for an observership, we also do not offer stipends.
Policy
Physicians interested in a four week observership in our department should read our policies and procedures before applying.
Application
Physicians agreeing to our policies and procedures may apply for an observership here.
All applicants must submit the following items to be considered. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
- Updated medical CV
- Medical school transcript (with translation to English if necessary)
- USMLE Step 1 score
- USMLE Step 2 score
Completed applications will be submitted to the director of observerships for review. Applicants will be contacted via email once a decision of acceptance, denial, or waitlisted is made.
Next Steps
- Once accepted, applicants will receive a letter of invitation (LOI). The applicant has seven days upon receipt to sign and return the LOI. This will secure a spot in our observership program.
- We allow accepted observers to indicate their preferred month of attendance but cannot guarantee that requests will be granted.
- Observers may request specific sub-specialties or may opt for a general schedule. Some sub-specialties may be unavailable but we make every attempt to create a schedule that is meaningful to the observer.
- Observers will receive their schedules the week before the rotation starts, along with information about an ID badge and program expectations.
- Observers may request letters of recommendation from attending pathologists with whom they have observed.
