INDIANAPOLIS – Five Indiana University School of Medicine faculty have been recognized among the nation's top physician-scientists as 2024 members of the Association of American Physicians (AAP) and the American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI).

New members will be inducted into these prestigious societies April 5-7 in Chicago as part of this year's joint meeting of the AAP, ASCI and the American Physician Scientists Association.

"Election as a member of the ASCI or AAP is a milestone achievement in the career of a physician-scientist," said Tatiana Foroud, PhD, executive associate dean for research affairs at the IU School of Medicine. "I'm thrilled that the innovation and outstanding research of our faculty is being recognized at such a high level. Drs. Hains, Evans-Molina, Apostolova, John and Gaston are incredibly deserving of these honors."

Association of American Physicians

Founded in 1885, the AAP is an honorific, elected society of America's leading physician-scientists who "exemplify the pinnacle of pioneering and enduring, impactful contributions to improve health," according to the AAP website. The association is composed of over 1,800 active members and approximately 750 emeritus and honorary members from the United States, Canada and other countries.

Each year, the Council of the Association nominates individuals for membership who have attained excellence in the pursuit of medical knowledge and the advancement of basic and clinical science through experimentation, discovery and application to clinical medicine.

American Society for Clinical Investigation

The ASCI is a nonprofit medical honor society comprised of more than 3,000 physician-scientists representing all medical specialties and dedicated to the advancement of research that extends understanding of diseases and improves treatment. Founded in 1908, the ASCI is one of the nation's oldest medical honor societies.

Each year, the ASCI Council considers membership nominations of several hundred physician-scientists and recommends up to 100 candidates for election based on outstanding scholarly achievement. According to the ASCI website, members must be physicians who have "accomplished meritorious original, creative and independent investigations in the clinical or allied sciences of medicine" and who enjoy "unimpeachable moral standing in the medical profession."
