Ordering Recommendation: Information about maternal cell contamination should be used in conjunction with molecular and/or cytogenetic fetal testing.

Methodology: Multiplex PCR and fragment analysis by capillary electrophoresis.

Performed: Monday through Friday

Reported: 6-9 days

Collect: Fetal specimens plus maternal blood.

Specimen Volume: 2-6 mL maternal whole blood in a purple-top (EDTA) tube, and 20 mL amniotic fluid in sterile centrifuge tubes or 20 mg dissected chorionic villi in CVS collecting media.

Unacceptable Conditions: Grossly hemolyzed or clotted.

Stability: Two weeks refrigerated; One month frozen
