The Indiana University School of Medicine Genetic Testing Laboratories are a team of national clinical reference laboratories that offer an extensive menu of high-complexity medical tests in the specialties of cytogenetics, biochemical genetics, pharmacogenomics and molecular genetics.

The Genetic Testing Laboratories is a worldwide leader in high standards of patient care supported by innovative laboratory research and development. In addition to our team, the labs are complemented with the expertise of experienced staff, medical geneticists, faculty, genetic counselors and researchers at IU School of Medicine.

Biochemical Genetics

The Biochemical Genetics Laboratory specializes in small molecule analyte tests for the diagnosis and management of patients with inborn errors of metabolism. Tests include mass spectrometry assays for amino acids, acylcarnitines and organic acids.

Cytogenetics

The Cytogenetics Laboratory has been a national leader in the field of cytogenetics for over five decades, providing chromosomal microarray, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and karyotype evaluation of both constitutional and neoplastic disorders across all age groups.

Diagnostic Genomics

The Diagnostic Genomics Laboratory provides competitive clinical somatic (cancer) and germline genomics testing services to IU Health and state of Indiana. 

Molecular Genetics and Pharmacogenomics  

A wide range of molecular tests are provided by the genetic testing labs, including molecular testing for inherited disorders, oncology and pharmacogenomics.

Fellowship Training

The Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics offers training in laboratory genetics and genomics which leads to eligibility for certification by the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG). The training period is 30 months with an option for an additional six months. Qualified applicants must hold a PhD or MD with relevant laboratory experience and are encouraged to apply by Oct. 1 each year.
