Emergency Radiology Clinical

The Emergency Radiology (ER) Division at Indiana University School of Medicine provides over 250,000 unique examinations in emergency and acute imaging annually throughout Indiana. In conjunction with the neuroradiology and pediatric radiology divisions, the Emergency Radiology Division provides adult and pediatric expertise to multiple hospitals and health care systems throughout the state.

Clinical Expertise

With unparalleled regional experience in emergency radiology, emergency radiology physicians contribute to three of Indiana’s three level one trauma centers: IU Health Methodist Hospital, Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health and Eskenazi Health. The division interprets exams from all major imaging modalities utilized in emergency settings, including computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound and x-ray, and nuclear medicine and fluoroscopy. All emergency radiology faculty at IU School of Medicine are board-certified in diagnostic radiology.

Clinical Shift

A typical shift entails point of care, contemporaneous image interpretation of radiological exams performed on acutely ill and injured patients. A diverse pathology is seen, ranging from sprained ankles to life threatening multi-system trauma. During a typical shift, an IU School of Medicine emergency radiologist can expect to interpret exams from over 100 individuals (commonly up to 140 unique examinations) across a spectrum of imaging modalities, but concentrated on radiography and CT.
