The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine offers a comprehensive, well-balanced AP/CP training program that prepares graduates to become highly competent practitioners and leaders within the field of pathology. The program is designed to ensure residents are well-prepared for their next endeavor — whether it’s a career in private practice or academia. Graduates have a strong track record of achievement and have been successful in their ability to secure competitive fellowship positions and jobs in private practice and academic settings. IU School of Medicine also has excellent sub-specialty training opportunities, and many residents choose to stay and complete their fellowship training with the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine offers fellowships in twelve subspecialties, including seven ACGME-accredited fellowships. The majority of training for each fellowship takes place at the IU Health Pathology Laboratory, which is a free-standing, state-of-the-art facility located on the IU School of Medicine—Indianapolis campus. Fellows may also rotate through IU Health University Hospital, IU Health Methodist Hospital, Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health, Eskenazi Health Services, or the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center — all on or near the IU School of Medicine—Indianapolis campus. IU Health and its wide network of affiliated health care providers are uniquely positioned to offer a very broad range of medical services to a large and highly diverse patient population.

Third- and fourth-year medical students can choose to take an elective offered by the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine to pursue a specific area of interest. The department’s accomplished teaching faculty offers focused training in surgical pathology, neuropathology, forensic pathology and more. Courses are available in Indianapolis as well as other IU School of Medicine campuses.

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at IU School of Medicine is in the process of redefining advanced training for doctoral students in Experimental Pathology, combining research and clinical skills. Plans are underway to introduce a new research-focused PhD program that encompasses the recent transformational developments in digital medicine.

The department's outstanding team of educators is dedicated to training and preparing critical personnel in the health professions for delivery of laboratory and patient care.

As part of the Health Professions Programs, the department administers three medical educational programs that integrate research, teaching, and service to reflect the real world of care delivery at all levels of study, including undergraduates seeking an associate degree in histotechnology or a bachelor's degree in clinical laboratory science or cytotechnology.

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine proudly supports pathology education and training within our impressive facility in Indianapolis. Our observership program accepts highly qualified international and national physicians seeking to further their pathology experiences. Our program offers physicians the opportunity to observe pathologists, residents and fellows in their day-to-day work responsibilities and educational sessions within our fast-paced laboratory.
