Neuromuscular Disorders

The Neuromuscular Disorder Program in the Department of Neurology at Indiana University School of Medicine offer comprehensive and expert care for patients with muscular dystrophy, myotonic dystrophy, ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig's disease) and other neuromuscular disorders. This includes physical therapy, occupational therapy, respiratory therapy, speech pathology, psychological services and neurological care. Team members consult and collaborate with other neuroscience specialists to create an effective treatment plan that is specifically tailored for each patient. Neuromuscular disorders specialists at IU are the only physicians in the state of Indiana who use single-fiber electromyography (EMG) to detect nerve-to-muscle messaging. Without the insight of experts at IU on single-fiber EMG, considered the most conclusive test for myasthenia gravis, it could otherwise provide difficulties in diagnosing neuromuscular disorders for patients at institutions without this technology and expertise.

As part of the ALS Association’s national network, IU School of Medicine faculty specializing in neuromuscular disorders provide evidence-based, multidisciplinary ALS care and services in a supportive environment that emphasizes quality of life.

As one of more than 150 top health care institutions across the United States, IU joins other MDA Care Centers as they treat thousands of patients each year who are living with muscular dystrophy, ALS and other neuromuscular disorders. Department faculty regularly conduct research on treatment options for neuromuscular disorders, specifically myasthenia gravis and Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome.

Faculty are also involved in multiple clinical trials, which include studies on ALS and myasthenia gravis. Neurology residents rotate with neuromuscular disorders physicians in the IU Health hospital system, and the department trains fellows in clinical neurophysiology, a one-year fellowship focusing on EMG and neuromuscular disorders.
