Inclusive Excellence Visiting Elective Program

The Inclusive Excellence Visiting Elective program supports fourth year or qualified third year medical students whose backgrounds, experiences and perspectives promote health equity and exemplify inclusive excellence. 

This program is designed to:

  • Increase awareness of opportunities in academic medicine.
  • Prepare trainees to provide culturally competent care for patients from all walks of life.
  • Encourage students from diverse backgrounds to apply to IU School of Medicine's residency programs.
  • Provide mentorship opportunities to trainees within their field of interest. 

Application

Thank you for your interest in the visiting elective program. We've reached capacity for this academic year but encourage you to apply after July 1, 2025.

Eligibility

All applicants must be full-time medical students in good academic standing at Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) or Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) accredited U.S. medical schools including U.S. territories AND meet all of the criteria:

  • Currently a fourth year or qualified third year medical student.
  • Qualified third year medical students must have completed core rotation in all of the following specialties:
    • Pediatrics
    • Internal Medicine
    • Obstetrics and Gynecology
    • Surgery

The Inclusive Excellence Visiting Elective program is open to all fourth year or qualified third year medical students with focus on those whose backgrounds, experiences or perspectives promote health equity and exemplify inclusive excellence. Selection criteria was developed in alignment with IU School of Medicine’s strategic plan.

*Emergency Medicine rotation is two weeks in duration.

 

Length of rotation

Rotations are four weeks in duration and are subject to space availability.

*Emergency Medicine is a two week duration.

Mentoring and networking opportunities

Each student will be paired with a faculty member in their areas of interest that will serve as a mentor and advisor. They will be given the opportunity to have a personal meeting with the residency program director or associate program director provided the student has not yet entered the match process. They will also be paired with a resident, ideally from a similar background, who will serve as a peer mentor and resource during the student’s visit. They shall also be able to attend educational activities of the department.

Financial assistance

The program will pay a $2,000 stipend only to out-of-state visiting elective students, to support costs associated with participation. Participants will receive compensation upon successful completion of the rotation. 

*Emergency Medicine stipend is $1,500.

Application

To ensure that Inclusive Excellence Visiting Elective participants are placed at the correct elective sites, follow the steps below.

  1. Complete the Visiting Elective program application.

  2. Receive correspondence on the status of your application from the  IU School of Medicine’s Center for Inclusive Excellence.
    **Please note that participation in the Visiting Elective program is contingent upon availability of visiting electives. 

  3. Complete the Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO) application. Submit all required items for IU School of Medicine, and your desired elective. The application must include:

  • A personal statement

  • One letter of recommendation

  • Curriculum Vitae

  • An official medical school transcript.

**Please note VSLO application fees will apply.**

There are a limited number of visiting elective positions available each academic year. The Center for Inclusive Excellence accepts visiting elective applications on a rolling basis.
