The American Urological Association will hold its 98th annual meeting of the North Central Section Sept. 18-21 in Indianapolis.
“The North Central Section is the Midwest regional section and the largest of all the sections of the AUA,” said Thomas A. Gardner, MD, MBA, the organization’s secretary and a professor of urology and of microbiology and immunology at the Indiana University School of Medicine.
Gardner recommended the annual meeting be hosted in Indianapolis for the first time in 25 years.
“The program includes academic and private practice urologists from Indiana, Iowa, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, North Dakota and South Dakota, as well as multiple invited regional and national experts,” he said. “There will be 400 to 500 urologists, residents, fellows and advanced practitioners in attendance.”
More than half of IU’s faculty in adult and pediatric urology will be presenting at the meeting, along with several IU School of Medicine residents and fellows.
“IU experts continue to contribute to multiple areas of urology, including pediatrics, cancer, reconstruction surgery, male and female sexual function, incontinence and voiding dysfunction,” Gardner said.
New roundtable group discussions will allow direct interaction between key opinion leaders and attendees. The Industry Expo will give attendees hands-on interaction with the latest technologies in urology. A half-day session will focus on health policy, and Elizabeth Takacs, MD, AUA North Central Section president, will lead a discussion on the state of the urologic workforce.
Several IU urology experts will speak and participate in panel discussions throughout the four-day annual meeting:
- Gardner and Michael Koch, MD, the retiring 26-year chair of the IU Department of Urology, will both lead podium sessions on prostate malignancies.
- Helen Bernie, DO, MPH, will co-moderate a session on male/couple infertility and sexual dysfunction.
- Chandru Sundaram, MD, will speak about conflict resolution and present on surgical techniques.
Thursday morning highlights include an update on testicular cancer from Lawrence Einhorn, MD, the Livestrong Foundation Professor of Oncology at IU School of Medicine who is known worldwide for pioneering the first successful treatment for testicular cancer in the 1970s. Since that time, Einhorn and his colleagues at IU have been working to refine the cure and reduce side effects. Einhorn will be joined by Timothy Masterson, MD, presenting testes cancer cases.
Other IU School of Medicine faculty speaking at the conference include Clint Bahler, MD, MS, retzius-sparing prostatectomy; Marcelino Rivera, MD, ureteral stones, benign prostate, guideline-based endourology, and bizarre cases; Kirstan Meldrum, MD, and Benjamin Whittam, MD, pediatric urologic reconstruction; Nabil Adra, MD, managing advanced prostate cancer; Kevin Rice, MD, trauma reconstruction; and Mimi Zhang, MD, urinary tract infection.
