Heart Failure Clinical Trials

Hispanic father and adult son sitting side-by-side.According to the U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 6 million adults have heart failure, also known as congestive heart failure. Heart failure may occur suddenly during an acute cardiac event or heart attack or over time, as a person’s heart becomes weaker. The latter type of heart failure often occurs as a result of chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, cardiomyopathy and diabetes.

Our cardiovascular clinical trials may consist of evaluating novel therapies to treat patients with heart failure as well as observational studies.

Current Clinical Trials

The following clinical trials are led by physician scientists who are part of the Krannert Cardiovascular Research Center at the IU School of Medicine.

DISCOVER STUDY:  Deliver Insights in Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy and Observational Outcomes in Real World (Discover-HCM): United States Prospective Registry Study

Objective: To estimate the incidence rate of new or worsening heart failure (HF) due to systolic dysfunction among patients with symptomatic obstructive HCM during periods of exposure to Camzyos and non-Camzyos therapy.

PI: Roopa A. Rao, MD

NCT No. NCT05489705

Status: Closed to Accrual

Leg heat therapy to improve functional performance in Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction

Objective: The primary objective of this pilot study is to establish evidence to support the validity of HT in improving skeletal muscle function and physical capacity with HFpEF.

PI: Onyedika Ilonze, MD, MPH

Status: Now Enrolling

NCT No. NCT06388226

REBIRTH STUDY: Randomized Evaluation of Bromocriptine in Myocardial Recovery Therapy for Peripartum Cardiomyopathy.

Objective: To determine if Bromocriptine improves myocardial recovery in post-partum cardiomyopathy (PPCM)

PI: Roopa A. Rao, MD

NCT No. NCT05180773

Status: Now Enrolling

ODYSSEY STUDY: A Study of Mavacamten in Adults with Symptomatic Non-obstructive Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy

Objective: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the safety, tolerability, and efficacy of a 48-week course of mavacamten compared with placebo in participants with symptomatic non-obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (nHCM).

PI: Roopa A. Rao, MD

NCT No. NCT5582395

Status: Closed to Accrual

PROTECT STUDY: Prospera Test Evaluation in Cardiac Transplant

Objective: To assess the clinical utility of combining Prospera™ testing with routine transplant management in detecting rejection or heart allograft dysfunction.

PI: Roopa A. Rao, MD

NCT No. NCT05205551

Status: Closed to Accrual

SHORE STUDY: Surveillance HeartCare® Outcomes Registry (SHORE)

Objective: To assess the clinical utility of surveillance using HeartCare testing services, in association with clinical care of heart transplant recipients.

PI: Roopa A. Rao, MD

NCT No. NCT03695601

Status: Closed to Accrual
