FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

INDIANAPOLIS — The ninth annual Richard G. Lugar Center for Renewable Energy Spring Forum will focus on “Building an Energy Security Roadmap.” It will take place May 10 in Room 450 of the IUPUI Campus Center, 420 University Blvd.

The forum is open to the public, but registration is required. Registration closes May 6.

“Energy security takes many forms,” said Peter J. Schubert, director of the Richard G. Lugar Center for Renewable Energy and a professor of electrical and computer engineering in the School of Engineering and Technology at IUPUI. “With 21 speakers and opportunity for audience input, this is a great event for energy practitioners, managers, academics, and those interested in the policy and economics of assuring our energy demands.”

Former Indianapolis Mayor Gregory A. Ballard will offer opening remarks, titled “Setting the Stage for Energy Security: cyber/physical/natural resilience; portfolio/fuel mix; and locality/sustainability of supply.”

Other speakers include:

  • John Lucas, vice president of information technology and cyber security at Citizens Energy Group, who will address “Challenges and Opportunities in Energy Security.”
  • Alexis Cain, a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency environmental scientist based in Chicago, who will discuss “Regional Perspective and Best Practices in Efficiency, Portfolios, Standards, Funding Mechanisms, and Rate Structures.”
  • Carolene Mays-Medley, former commissioner and vice chair of the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission and now executive director of the White River State Park Development Commission, who will address “Successes, Failures, and Risks with Alternate Energy Technologies and Policies in Indiana.”
  • Indiana State Senator Jim Merritt, who will focus on “Aspects and Qualities Needed for a Secure Energy Future in Indiana: Residential, commercial, industrial, environmental.”

The Richard G. Lugar Center for Renewable Energy is an interdisciplinary research center that strives to meet societal and public needs and challenges in key energy and environmental areas.

Over the past several years, the center has expanded its traditional areas of research, education and expertise to include efforts in waste-to-energy technologies and applications; biomass conversion to fuels, chemicals, power and heat; and industrial energy efficiency and management.
