IUPUI students, faculty, staff will honor memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through service work

MEDIA ADVISORY

What: Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis will honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s commitment to service and social justice with the 16th annual MLK Day of Service, themed “Stand Up, Speak Out.”

When: Saturday, Jan. 16, 2016

Who: Hundreds of students, faculty and staff will join together in a day of service across Indianapolis to work with more than a dozen community partners.

Where: Participants will report at 8 a.m. for registration, breakfast, a short keynote address by IUPUI professor Lori Patton Davis and other activities at the IUPUI Campus Center, 420 University Blvd., before departing to assigned service sites for projects from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Why: Days of service at IUPUI are intentionally constructed around learning outcomes to ensure educational experiences. Learning outcomes for MLK Jr. Day of Service, held in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., include participants being able to:

  • reflect and identify roles they are best suited to fill to create social change (e.g., political advocacy, donating money, volunteering or a combination thereof);
  • identify community issues that need to be addressed;
  • explain how they can use their education to serve the community.

Community Partners for the IUPUI MLK Day of Service 2016*:

  • Ronald McDonald House, 435 Limestone St., cleaning and organizing projects
  • FIDO, 456 N. Holmes Ave., warehouse organizing and cleanup
  • FHL, TBA, food pantry warehouse maintenance and cleaning
  • Exodus, TBA, organizing donations and clothing for refugees
  • MLK Community Center, 40 W. 40th St., reorganize youth department in preparation for spring-semester activities.
  • Dathouse, 516 Lincoln St., general cleaning, moving heavy items, organizing
  • Partners in Housing, 2717 Anna Lane, help clean/prep/sort items, restock
  • Indy Baxter YMCA, 900 S. Shelby St., sanitizing and tidying children’s areas in wellness center and outdoor campus (weather permitting)
  • Indiana Historical Society, 450 W. Ohio St., manual labor, painting
  • Athenaeum, 1 E. Michigan St., housekeeping tasks
  • Midwest Food Bank, 6450 S. Belmont Ave., stacking pallets of food and drinks, repackaging food, cleaning/maintenance projects
  • Ransom Place, St. Clair/Indiana/Paca streets, curb cleaning and debris pickup, painting
  • Ransburg YMCA, 501 N. Shortridge Road, front desk duties, cleaning, maintenance
  • Paws Pantry, IUPUI Campus Center, cleaning pantry, creating recipe cards, stocking food
  • Broad Ripple Village Association, 6323 Guilford Ave., TBA
