INDIANAPOLIS — Data released this week shows a dramatic 21 percent increase in the number of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis students who studied abroad in 2013-14 compared to the previous year, according to the latest figures from the Institute of International Education.
Some 432 IUPUI students received academic credit for studying abroad in 2013-14, up from 358 students in 2012-13.
The increase is linked to several factors, particularly the existence of more spring-break programs available to students and the significant rise in participation from students in the Kelley School of Business and in health sciences programs.
IUPUI faculty and staff ran 60 study-abroad programs in 2013-14, up from 47 in 2011-12. The vast majority of IUPUI students study abroad in programs administered by IUPUI.
The institute released the data in its annual Open Doors report, a comprehensive report on the international activity of U.S. institutions of higher education.
The data for 2013-14 shows:
- A total of 294 participants (68 percent) were undergraduates; 137 (32 percent) were graduate students.
- On average, 90 percent of IUPUI students who studied abroad did so in a short-term program of six weeks or less.
- Students visited 37 different countries through study abroad.
- The top three country destinations were the United Kingdom (49), Germany (44) and China (40).
The increase in study abroad reflects IUPUI’s commitment to strengthening international efforts through increasing opportunities for study abroad and providing all students with the opportunity for global learning. IUPUI committed to increase participation in study abroad by 25 percent from 2013 to 2019 through the Generation Study Abroad initiative of IIE. More than 350 U.S. universities and colleges are part of the initiative.
