Alfreeda Goff named IUPUI’s interim director of athletics

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis Athletics Department has announced that longtime athletics administrator Alfreeda Goff will serve as the department’s interim director of athletics, effective immediately. Goff recently stepped down as senior associate commissioner and chief championships administrator at the Horizon League after a 17-year run at the Indianapolis-based office. Goff takes over for Michael Moore, who stepped down earlier this month after 19-plus years as IUPUI’s director of athletics.

“Alfreeda is a highly experienced athletics administrator and respected member of the Indianapolis community, and we are extremely fortunate to have someone of her caliber join our athletics department,” Chancellor Nasser H. Paydar said. “Alfreeda will continue to move our program forward and will work closely with me to develop a plan to identify IUPUI’s next permanent athletic director.”

“I found the opportunity intriguing, and I saw this as a chance to help somebody,” Goff said. “I want to be there to help people. There are a lot of young coaches and a lot of seasoned coaches on staff. I can be a resource to all of them. I’m going to be the person people can bounce things off of.

“In my 40 years (of experience), I’ve learned that it’s best that communication be open and transparent. That’s always a key to success for coaches and administrators alike.”

One of the most highly respected women in intercollegiate athletics, Goff served the Horizon League as its director of championships, Senior Woman Administrator and league governance liaison. She oversaw all championships and was directly responsible for baseball, golf, men’s soccer, softball, indoor track and field, and volleyball. For the league’s premier sport, basketball, she served as tournament director with oversight for all operations. In addition, she played a vital role in the league’s co-hosting of numerous NCAA basketball events, including the 2015 Men’s Final Four.

Goff joined the Horizon League in 1998 after spending four years as the director of athletics at Virginia State University. In 1999, Goff was named one of seven district winners of the Administrator of the Year Award, presented annually by the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators.

She served as an assistant track and field coach at the University of Pittsburgh in 1975 before serving as head coach for six years. Goff then joined the administrative ranks as the administrative assistant for women’s athletics and departmental scheduling at Pitt. She was later an associate athletic director at VCU from 1987 to 1994.

Goff represented the Horizon League on the NCAA Division I Management Council from 1999 to 2004. She has also served on a number of other national committees, including the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Committee and Women’s Basketball Issues Committee, NCAA Woman of the Year Committee, the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators’ Executive Committee, and the NCAA Division I Track and Field Committee.

In summer 2005, Goff was honored as the Black Coaches Association’s Administrator of the Year. She is a board member of the Minority Opportunities Athletics Association, an affiliate organization of NACDA, and serves on the NCAA’s Life Work Balance Task Force and Diversity Leadership Strategic Planning Committee. Goff also was president of the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators in 2004-05.

Goff holds a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education from Slippery Rock State College and a master’s degree in health and physical education from Pennsylvania State University. She previously served on the Board of Directors of the Indianapolis YWCA and is the organization’s past president.

Goff will lead the department until a permanent director of athletics is hired. IUPUI has partnered with CarrSports Consulting LLC to lead the national search process. Interested applicants can send materials to CarrSports Consulting at csciupuiad@gmail.com.
