IUPUI to dedicate outdoor sports facility, honor Crispus Attucks 1955 State Champs and Lockefield Gardens Dust Bowl

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis will dedicate new outdoor sand volleyball and basketball courts with a three-part ceremony honoring two icons of local basketball history: the Lockefield Gardens Dust Bowl and the Crispus Attucks 1955 state high school champions.

“A Championship Tribute” will take place from 3 to 5 p.m., Wednesday, April 1. The event is free and open to the public. The schedule is:

  • 3 to 3:30 p.m.: Campus Recreation Outdoor Facility dedication and unveiling of plaque honoring the Dust Bowl, northwest corner of Blake Street and West North Street. Speakers include IUPUI Chancellor Charles R. Bantz and basketball legend Oscar Robertson.
  • 3:35 to 4 p.m.: Reception, Hine Hall (formerly University Place Conference Center), 850 W. Michigan St., 2014-2015 Crispus Attucks boy’s basketball team as guests.
  • 4 to 5 p.m.: Symposium, Hine Hall Auditorium, 1955 Crispus Attucks State Champs Oscar Robertson, John Gipson and Bill Hampton, along with Fred Robinson, National Crispus Attucks Alumni Association president, will discuss basketball and life in 1950s Indianapolis; Malcolm Moran, director of the National Sports Journalism Center at IUPUI as moderator.
