FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

INDIANAPOLIS — Representatives from more than 40 universities and nearly 20 graduate programs at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis will be at the fifth annual Graduate Expo, hosted by the IUPUI Graduate Office.

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 11 on the fourth floor of the IUPUI Campus Center, 420 University Blvd. Registration is encouraged for the free event.

“Understanding what admissions committees are seeking and successfully meeting those requirements is the beginning of a fruitful graduate career,” said Janice Blum with the Graduate Office.

Among other suggestions, recruiters from last year’s expo offered these tips for graduate school applicants:

  • “Proofread everything! You’d be surprised how many personal statements we get with the name of our school wrong.”
  • “Know the proper titles for the positions you can pursue with the degree you are applying to. For example, only those with a doctorate degree can be called a psychologist. It may seem like a small detail, but to those in the field it is not, and our admissions committee notices these things when reviewing files — wrong titles might imply the student hasn’t done enough research into the field.”
  • Demonstration of strong communications skills was advised for history, psychology, sociology, philosophy, political science, anthropology and English majors.

The expo also features two breakout sessions – Using LinkedIn at 10:45 a.m. and  GRE Test Prep at noon.
