Governor, Indianapolis mayor proclaim May 16-18 Education Weekend

INDIANAPOLIS — Gov. Mike Pence and Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard have thrown their support behind the Central Indiana Education Alliance’s goal of fostering the success of young residents in Marion County from cradle to career by proclaiming May 16-18 Education Weekend.

Education Weekend is central to the alliance’s mission and is designed to provide opportunities for the larger community to engage in educational issues, honor education leaders, develop community conversations and engage children and families in fun, interactive, educational activities.

A third proclamation supporting Education Weekend was made by the Indiana Public School Superintendents Association.

Friday, May 16

The Hearing

The Hearing “Equity, Quality, and Success in Education: Looking Back and Moving Forward … a Faith Perspective” — is a public debate on how far we have come, or not, on the eve of the 60th anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education. Panel members include Mary McCoy, Archdiocese of Indianapolis; Rabbi Benjamin Sendrow, Congregation Shaarey Tefilla; Rev. Dr. Felipe Martinez, Whitewater Valley Presbytery; and Karega Rausch, The Equity Project at Indiana University. Moderators are Judith Cebula, Center for Faith and Vocation at Butler University; Angelique Walker-Smith, The Church Federation of Greater Indianapolis; and Andrew Hohman, Marian University Department of Religion and Philosophy.

Rotary Education Weekend Equity Awards

Sponsored by the Rotary Foundation of Indianapolis, the Indianapolis Recorder and the Indiana Civil Rights Commission, the Central Indiana Education Alliance will present Rotary Education Weekend Equity Awards named in honor or memory of community leaders who have had a positive impact on education. The Cardinal Joseph E. Ritter Award will recognize an “unsung hero” of education; the Father Boniface Hardin award will recognize an outstanding educational administrator; the Dr. Jacqueline S. Greenwood award will recognize an outstanding teacher; and the Bart Peterson Award will recognize an outstanding K-12 or college student.

Coffee and Careers in Sports

Robert Faulkens, assistant commissioner for the Indiana High School Athletic Association and former Indianapolis Public Schools principal, and Larry Morwick, writer, retired coach/teacher/administrator and former Indiana University football co-captain, will discuss career opportunities in coaching, sports administration and sports medicine. Faulkins and Morwick will look at a wide variety of entry points for both men and women in high school and college and for individuals considering engaging or re-engaging education, as well as offer valuable coaching points for parents who want to be involved in their child’s education.

 

STEAM Day

A mall-wide interactive event with more than 70 activities supporting STEAM — science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics — that will engage visitors and offer students opportunities to participate in a wide variety of unique learning experiences including robotics, Eli Lilly and Co.’s “Chemistry Is a Blast,” arts and crafts activities such as computer touch-screen painting, as well as music, art and dance presentations throughout the Fashion Café. Opportunities for adults include credit recovery, scholarship information and career exploration.

“Remember the Titans”

This fun family activity includes a meet-and-greet with select members of the recent Class 4A state champion Indianapolis Arsenal Technical Titans basketball team and staff; a viewing of the 2000 blockbuster movie “Remember the Titans”; and book recommendations for youth — “Through My Eyes” by Ruby Bridges and “Students on Strike” by John A. Stokes, Herman Viola and Lois Wolfe — and adults — “A Mighty Long Way: My Journal to Justice at Little Rock Central High School” by Carlotta Walls Lanier and “Elizabeth and Hazel: Two Women of Little Rock” by David Margolick.

The Central Indiana Education Alliance is a community coalition committed to student achievement from birth and early childhood education to high school graduation, post-Grade 12 education and career preparedness. The alliance also advocates for policy initiatives that enhance education equity, attainment and advancement while supporting and facilitating scalable, replicable programs that lead to transformational change.
