INDIANAPOLIS — The Create a Career website has ranked the IU School of Social Work’s online Master of Social Work program seventh among the 20 best online degree MSW programs in the country.
The online programs were selected by the website based on the quality of the program, the types of courses provided, the faculty, awards, rankings and reputation, including the school’s reputation for effectively providing online degree programs.
“Being ranked seventh in the nation is just excellent news,” said Michael Patchner, dean of the school. “Our faculty and staff have worked very hard to create MSW Direct, our online MSW program. Because of the need for online graduate education in social work, we knew our school would have to respond. We knew we had a high-quality MSW program with an excellent faculty and an excellent curriculum. We spent considerable time planning an online program that would replicate the quality of our face-to-face program. This ranking is a testament to the work we put into designing and delivering MSW Direct.”
Students in the MSW Direct program are required to come to campus only once for a mandatory three-day orientation; all other classes meet online. Just like the traditional class meetings, students meet at the same time, but using a webcam and microphone on their computer. All classes also have an asynchronous dimension, allowing students to work independently.
Field placements occur in or near their local community. IU’s MSW Direct graduates engage in multi-faceted roles as community organizers, clinicians, group facilitators, supervisors, policy analysts and advocates.
