Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis won first place in the Campus Kitchens Project’s video competition, earning a $5,000 grant that will be used to launch a campus kitchen at IUPUI by fall 2014, it was announced today.
IUPUI and six other schools competed for one of five $5,000 grants from the Sodexo Foundation, which works to ensure that every child in the United States, especially those most at-risk, grows up with dependable access to enough nutritious food to enable them to lead healthy, productive lives.
The Campus Kitchens Project helps universities build a more sustainable approach to food by creating a student-run kitchen that keeps food from going to waste by turning it into nutritious meals for those who are struggling with food insecurity.
“We are thrilled to have received the amazing support from the IUPUI and Indianapolis communities to win this grant and bring Campus Kitchens to IUPUI,” said Colleen McCormick, director of the IUPUI Office of Sustainability. “We look forward to launching this service learning initiative on campus in the fall.”
The seven schools qualified for the competition through the Campus Kitchens Project’s Campus Kitchen Planner, which provides step-by-step guidance to creating a campus kitchen. After completing several steps in the planner, each competing school submitted a video explaining why its community would benefit from a campus kitchen.
From Jan. 20 to 29, IUPUI rallied more than 10,000 votes from students, alumni, staff and supporters for its video. IUPUI received 10,092 votes, edging the second-place finisher, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, by a single vote.
